The CSR Journal Magazine

A 19-year-old medical aspirant, Anu Keerthana, died in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, after allegedly attempting suicide. The individual reportedly consumed poison and succumbed shortly after being taken to the hospital. The tragic event occurred just days before the scheduled re-examination of the NEET-UG, which was cancelled earlier due to allegations of a paper leak.

Anu had attempted the NEET-UG exam previously in 2025 but was reportedly allotted a seat in an undesired branch, which added to her distress. This year, she intended to retake the examination, hoping for a more favourable outcome. However, her situation reportedly intensified as she faced immense pressure associated with the upcoming retest.

Academic Pressures Highlighted

The local CPI-M leader, Padmanabhan, stated that Anu was deeply troubled by her perceived inadequacy in obtaining acceptable marks in the retest. He recounted that Anu had initially taken the NEET examination in 2025, which resulted in her being eligible for a dental seat. Following the cancellation of the recent examination due to irregularities, Anu had expressed her concerns to her uncle, indicating despair over her current academic standing.

Padmanabhan noted, “She had prepared extensively for the NEET retest, but the thought of not achieving the expected marks weighed heavily on her.” The distress caused by the pressure of academic expectations may have contributed to the unfortunate outcome of this incident.

According to sources, Anu had reached out to family members shortly before the incident, conveying her feeling of being overwhelmed by her circumstances. This acknowledgement of her emotional state prior to her tragic decision highlights the importance of monitoring the mental health of students facing high-stakes examinations.

Ongoing Investigation and Autopsy

In light of this tragic incident, the local authorities have initiated an investigation to ascertain the specific circumstances surrounding Anu’s death. The police have sent the body for an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death. As investigations continue, they aim to gather more information regarding the pressures faced by students amid academic competitions.

The case has drawn attention to the mental health challenges encountered by students preparing for rigorous examinations like NEET. Educational institutions and families are urged to facilitate conversations regarding emotional wellbeing to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

This incident reflects broader concerns regarding student mental health and the societal expectations that weigh heavily upon young aspirants. As the authorities investigate this case, it serves as a pivotal moment for examining the support structures available to students in academic environments.
