Zimbabwe Cricket Team Stranded in Delhi After T20 World Cup Amid Airspace Restrictions, Players Safe

The CSR Journal Magazine

The return journey of the Zimbabwe national cricket team from India following the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup has encountered unforeseen delays due to significant airspace restrictions in parts of West Asia. Zimbabwe Cricket officially announced that the players and support staff are currently stationed in Delhi, assuring their safety as organisers navigate alternate travel options. The statement released on Monday highlighted the impact of these developments on the squad’s travel plans.

Initially, the team was scheduled to depart from Delhi, transiting through Dubai before reaching their home city of Harare. However, changing conditions in the Middle East have disrupted vital transportation routes, affecting the planned flights. “Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) confirms that the Zimbabwe senior men’s team remains safe and well in India following the conclusion of their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign,” the announcement read. The squad played their final match of the tournament against South Africa on the previous Sunday.

On the morning of their intended return, the Zimbabwean players were set to travel in stages. This included bookings on Emirates flights from Delhi to Dubai, and subsequently onward to Harare. The squad had planned to commence their journey early Monday; however, escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia have led to widespread closures of airspace, causing several airlines to suspend or reroute their flights, which in turn has led to the team remaining in India at this time.

Zimbabwe Cricket has been working closely with the International Cricket Council (ICC) to secure alternative travel arrangements. They are exploring different routes and possible air carriers to facilitate the team’s timely and safe return to Zimbabwe. The ICC has initiated contingency measures and is collaborating with international airlines to mitigate the impact of the ongoing airspace issues. Constant communication between the ICC and Zimbabwe’s team management is being maintained to ensure that the players and staff remain well-informed and secure.

This air travel disruption follows recent missile exchanges involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Such developments have prompted several nations in West Asia to temporarily close their airspace, which has affected numerous international flights and key transit hubs, particularly Dubai. The situation continues to evolve, and the cricketing bodies are actively seeking solutions to ensure that all teams can return home safely after their respective engagements in India and Sri Lanka.

The players and staff will remain in Delhi until sufficient arrangements can be finalised, and the cricketing authorities are prioritising their safety and well-being during this challenging period. The cricket community is closely following the developments to ensure a swift resolution to the issue at hand.
