IPL 2026: Matthew Hayden Designates Rahul Tewatia as Successor to Mongoose Bat

The CSR Journal Magazine

Matthew Hayden, batting coach for Gujarat Titans, has identified Rahul Tewatia as the ideal candidate to inherit his distinctive Mongoose bat, emphasizing Tewatia’s prowess in power-hitting as the upcoming IPL 2026 approaches. This announcement was made during Shubharambh 2026, a significant event held in Ahmedabad that gathered the entire Gujarat Titans squad, franchise owners, partners, and fans.

The Mongoose bat, recognized for its longer handle and shorter blade, is designed to optimize bat speed and shot power. Its unique features, including an extended sweet spot and thick edges, have proven especially advantageous in T20 formats. Hayden’s notable performance with the Mongoose occurred during IPL 2010 when he scored 93 runs off just 43 balls against the Delhi Daredevils, which is now known as the Delhi Capitals. This innings was marked by nine fours and seven sixes, showcasing the bat’s effectiveness.

Tewatia’s Role as a Finisher

During the Shubharambh event, Hayden praised Tewatia, stating, “If I had to hand my Mongoose bat to someone from GT, it would have to be Rahul Tewatia. He has the power. He does a very good job with the long bat. The margins in T20 cricket are five runs, ten runs, and to have that power at the backend and frontend is good. You will get it, mate.” Tewatia has proven to be an essential finisher for the Gujarat Titans in the past four seasons. He has accumulated 591 runs from 43 innings, boasting an average of 22.73 and a strike rate exceeding 150. His pinnacle score while with the franchise stands at 43 not out.

Glenn Phillips Offers Insight on Fielding

Also present at the Shubharambh event, New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips shared his thoughts on fielding, particularly catching. “I am worried when an easy catch comes my way. Hard catches, I know I will take, but easy catches, I am worried,” Phillips remarked, providing a unique perspective on the pressures of fielding.

Nehra Emphasizes Trust in Players

Gujarat Titans coach Ashish Nehra underscored the team’s current strategy and mindset, stating that there is no intent to alter their playing style. “I don’t think there’s a need to think differently this season. In fact, I don’t have to think, the players do. They have to think. They have to play; I’m sitting outside,” Nehra emphasized, underlining the trust placed in the players’ decision-making abilities.

Continuing on the team mentality, Nehra added, “From day one, our mindset has been clear; we are not here to participate, we are here to compete and win. For a new team, it is easy to think it might take time, but that was never our approach.”
