Yuvraj Singh, the former Indian all-rounder, has recently shared insights about his discussions with Sourav Ganguly prior to his appointment as the assistant coach and batting coach for the Delhi Capitals ahead of the IPL 2027 season. The franchise has undergone significant changes in its support staff, with Ganguly stepping in as the head coach and Yuvraj joining him in a pivotal role.

As the Delhi Capitals strive for their first IPL title, the involvement of these two cricketing icons, who have made substantial contributions to Indian cricket, is expected to enhance the team’s prospects. Yuvraj made his international debut in 2000 under Ganguly’s captaincy, and their successful collaboration has been marked by numerous notable victories for India.

In a video released by the Delhi Capitals on their YouTube channel, Yuvraj recounted how Ganguly approached him regarding the coaching position. He quoted Ganguly as saying, “Would you be my assistant?” to which Yuvraj humorously replied, “I’ve been your assistant for the last 25 years, so I’ll probably be doing the same job!”

Yuvraj’s Excitement for the New Challenge

Yuvraj Singh expressed enthusiasm about his new role within the Delhi Capitals, highlighting his experience as a mentor to emerging talents such as Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma. He stated that he had been preparing for this opportunity over the past three to four years and was eager to contribute to the team environment.

He remarked, “I was very happy to do it. I have worked with players individually, but being part of the entire team environment will be a different experience, and I’m really excited about it.” This transition marks a significant step in his career as he moves from individual mentoring to a more comprehensive coaching role.

Yuvraj also acknowledged the valuable lessons he learned from Ganguly during their playing days, particularly regarding the importance of fostering a positive and supportive team atmosphere. He noted, “The best thing I learnt from Dada was how to create a good team environment. When he was captain and I made my debut, he kept us together.” This emphasis on unity and belief in the team’s potential has been a cornerstone of their shared successes.

Influence of Sourav Ganguly on Yuvraj’s Career

Yuvraj Singh credited Ganguly for his mentorship throughout his career, stating that Ganguly has always been like a big brother to him. He appreciated Ganguly’s guidance in understanding selection processes and what it takes to excel as an international cricketer. Yuvraj’s respect for Ganguly’s leadership style is evident in his remarks about how Ganguly motivated the team to achieve greatness.

Reflecting on their journey together, Yuvraj said, “He made us believe that we could become a great team and win tournaments outside India.” This belief, instilled by Ganguly, has had a lasting impact on Yuvraj and continues to influence his approach to coaching.

As the Delhi Capitals prepare for the upcoming season, the collaboration between Yuvraj Singh and Sourav Ganguly is anticipated to bring a wealth of experience and insight to the team. Their shared history and mutual respect may play a crucial role in shaping the team’s performance in the IPL 2027.
