BSE Sensex Surges Over 1,100 Points, Investors Gain Rs 3.89 Lakh Crore

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian equity benchmark indices, BSE Sensex and Nifty50, experienced a significant rally on Tuesday, with both indices rising over 1 per cent during afternoon trading. This surge was attributed to various factors, including comments made by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman regarding long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax and securities transaction tax (STT), alongside a notable increase in IT stocks.

At closing, Nifty50 was recorded at 22,702.05, marking an increase of 339 points or 1.51 per cent. Concurrently, BSE Sensex reached 72,988.54, up 1,064 points or 1.48 per cent. The rally resulted in an increase of over Rs 3.89 lakh crore in the combined market capitalisation of listed companies, bringing the total to Rs 469 lakh crore.

IT companies were at the forefront of this growth, with HCL Tech shares rising by more than 5 per cent following the release of the company’s second-quarter results. Additionally, TCS, another major player in the sector, advanced by approximately 5 per cent, while Tech Mahindra and Infosys saw increases of around 3 per cent each.

Focus on LTCG and STT Discussions

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed the ongoing discussions concerning LTCG tax and STT during her speech at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum. She indicated that both domestic and international investors have been actively sharing their perspectives on the LTCG tax.

Sitharaman mentioned that the debate surrounding transaction tax and the potential for uniform taxation across different asset classes has been a significant topic of discussion. While she acknowledged the importance of these discussions, she did not commit to any specific changes. “We are very close to the budget and the preparation for the budget has started, and it may not be the best time for me to say what I will or what I will not consider,” she stated.

Her comments come amid substantial outflows from India’s equity market, which is currently facing various challenges. In its recent Ecowrap report, SBI Research suggested that the government should contemplate abolishing the LTCG tax on equities, positing that such a move could incentivise investors to maintain their investments for longer periods.

IT Sector Leads Market Gains

The rally in heavyweight IT stocks played a crucial role in bolstering the broader market, despite existing headwinds. The decline in global AI-linked stocks has also contributed to a more positive outlook for India’s prominent technology firms, which are increasingly being perceived as an ‘anti-AI’ trade.

South Korea’s Kospi, a key indicator of the artificial intelligence investment boom, saw a drop of over 6 per cent, while Japan’s Nikkei fell by more than 2 per cent. Major technology stocks, including Samsung, faced significant losses amid concerns about excessive optimism surrounding emerging technologies.

Analysts have cautioned that the current AI rally may be evolving into a speculative bubble, adding to the complexity of the market environment. The performance of IT stocks has been pivotal in lifting investor sentiment, providing a counterbalance to the challenges faced by other sectors.

Rupee Strengthens Amid RBI Measures

The Indian rupee appreciated by 82 paise to 94.96 against the US dollar during early trade on Tuesday, continuing its recovery following measures introduced by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to support the weakening currency. On Monday, the RBI imposed stricter regulations on rupee non-deliverable derivative contracts, limiting overseas clients to using these instruments solely for hedging purposes.

Additionally, the central bank extended a 20 per cent cash reserve requirement to banks’ own rupee currency hedges. These actions followed four measures announced by the RBI on Saturday, which included a dedicated dollar supply window for three state-run oil companies and tighter restrictions on foreign exchange derivatives.

Analysts suggest that these measures are expected to alleviate pressure on the spot market and mitigate speculative dollar buying, thereby supporting the currency in the short term. However, sustained recovery will rely on foreign institutional investor flows, crude oil prices, and overall dollar movement. In the bond market, yields eased from multi-year highs, providing further relief to equity markets.

The yield on the US 10-year Treasury fell below 5.2 per cent, while the 30-year Treasury yield decreased to 5.56 per cent. The yield on two-year US Treasury bonds, which often reflects expectations regarding Federal Reserve interest rate decisions, also declined below 4.8 per cent. This easing of bond yields is significant as rising yields have previously pressured stock markets, diverting funds away from equities.
