Rahul Gandhi Accuses Delhi Police of Brutality Against Protesters

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has accused the Delhi Police of violently assaulting Youth Congress workers during protests against alleged irregularities in electoral rolls. He claimed that a female student from Delhi University, Athira, has lost hearing in one ear due to police actions. Gandhi made these statements during a press conference held in Delhi on Wednesday.

Athira, who hails from Kerala, alleged that she was assaulted inside a police bus after being detained during the protests on Tuesday. She stated that she was struck on her ear, resulting in her hearing loss. Gandhi highlighted her case, referencing a previous incident where another protester was reportedly blinded during a similar confrontation.

During the press conference, Athira expressed concerns over the absence of female police personnel during her detention. She stated that she had requested to see a female officer, as protocol dictates that at least one should be present during such detentions. Athira claimed that the police bus subsequently stopped outside the Connaught Place police station, where she was allegedly struck multiple times.

Further Allegations of Police Misconduct

In addition to Athira’s allegations, another female worker from the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) also accused the Delhi Police of physical assault during the same protest. Rahul Gandhi introduced her as “our sherni,” acknowledging her courage despite the violence she allegedly faced. She claimed that a female constable, identified as Chanchal Yadav, assaulted her by grabbing her neck, pushing her onto a seat, and scratching her face and ear with her nails.

The reported incidents occurred while NSUI workers were being detained in buses. These allegations are part of a broader pattern of claims regarding police brutality during protests against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Various student organisations and other groups have been vocal in their demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Protests have taken place at multiple locations across Delhi, including Connaught Place and areas near the Ramakrishna Ashram Marg Metro station. Congress youth leaders have reported that police personnel used lathis and kicked them during their detentions. Concerns have also been raised regarding minors who were allegedly released without their personal belongings, leaving them without means to return home.

Media Personnel Also Affected

Several journalists covering the protests have reported being detained despite identifying themselves as media personnel and showing their press cards. This has raised additional concerns about the treatment of the press during such demonstrations. The situation continues to develop, and further updates are expected as more information becomes available.

The allegations against the Delhi Police add to ongoing discussions about the treatment of protesters and the rights of individuals during demonstrations. As the protests continue, the response from law enforcement and the government will be closely monitored by various stakeholders.

In light of these events, the Congress party has intensified its criticism of the Delhi Police, calling for accountability and transparency in handling protests. The situation remains fluid, with both sides preparing for potential further developments in the coming days.
