Chinese President Xi Jinping stated on Friday that he and US President Donald Trump may convene two additional times in 2026, specifically at the APEC summit in China in November and the G20 summit in Miami in December. This announcement follows Xi’s three-day state visit to Washington, which yielded minimal publicly documented agreements.

During a private tea session at the White House, Xi extended an invitation to Trump and the First Lady to visit China. Trump described the discussions as productive, insisting that they would yield benefits for American farmers, although he did not divulge any specifics regarding these benefits.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer mentioned that details regarding the trade agreements made during the summit would be available on Monday. He indicated that there has been progress in terms of market access, noting that certain agricultural and medical exports to China, alongside specific Chinese products entering the US, would be exempt from trade restrictions.

Trade Truce and Ongoing Disagreements

Both nations had previously agreed to extend their trade truce until January 2024. An ongoing area of disagreement is Taiwan, which featured prominently in discussions. During Thursday’s private meetings, Xi advised the US to approach the Taiwan matter with caution. According to Chinese state media reports, he also urged the US to oppose any moves towards Taiwan independence.

The US has consistently maintained that it does not support Taiwan independence, although this stance differs from what Beijing expects. Throughout the visit, Trump did not announce any alterations to US policy regarding Taiwan, maintaining a cautious balance in diplomatic relations.

On another front, the leaders also conversed about geopolitical issues, including the ongoing conflict in Iran. However, Trump chose not to reveal further details concerning this subject. Contrarily, China’s narrative of the meetings encompassed discussions about the situations in Ukraine and the Korean Peninsula.

Future Collaborations and Cultural Exchange

Both parties identified artificial intelligence as a prospective area for collaboration, although specific agreements on this issue were not announced during the summit. The potential for joint efforts in technology advancement is seen as a significant avenue for future engagement between the two countries.

Xi’s visit concluded with a tour of the National Archives, during which Trump showcased the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, highlighting historical ties and the foundational principles of the United States. This cultural exchange was intended to foster goodwill between the two nations.

The proposed meetings later in the year aim to provide both leaders with further opportunities to address their differences and work towards common ground. Attention will remain focused on Monday, when further details about the recent negotiations are expected to be disclosed from Washington.
