“Will Weaken JD(U)”: Congress Leader Udit Raj on Nitish Kumar’s Rajya Sabha Move

The CSR Journal Magazine

Udit Raj, a prominent leader from the Congress party, expressed his astonishment regarding Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s recent decision to join the Rajya Sabha. He articulated that this shift may lead to a significant weakening of the Janata Dal (United) party. Raj emphasized issues such as unemployment and the declining standards of education in Bihar’s government-run institutions.

He mentioned that if Kumar ascends to the role of Member of Parliament, it would be more dignified for him to not assume any additional responsibilities. Raj stated, “I am surprised by how Nitish Kumar agreed to it. This will result in weakening of the JD(U)… There are no jobs, and everything has been privatised. The standards of the government schools are at their lowest…”

Political Reactions Highlighting the Shift

Mrityunjay Tiwari from the Rashtriya Janata Dal described Kumar’s announcement as a significant political surprise, coming just months after the assembly elections. He characterized the move as a “huge political abduction” and critiqued the Bharatiya Janata Party’s treatment of its coalition partners. Tiwari pointed out that the swift removal of Chief Minister Kumar by the BJP was unexpected and noted that his party leader, Tejashwi Yadav, had predicted such an outcome. “A lot of people from JD(U) are in collusion with the BJP, while many want Nitish Kumar to stay… This is a huge political abduction… The attitude of BJP towards their allies is becoming increasingly apparent,” Tiwari added.

JD(U) Defends Nitish Kumar’s Accomplishments

JD(U) MP and Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, known as Lalan Singh, responded to the criticism by underscoring Kumar’s contributions to Bihar’s development. He asserted that Kumar’s decisions regarding his political future are solely his to make. Singh stated, “Nitish Kumar will make this decision… He will go wherever he wants to go. It is his party… No one could have imagined what Nitish Kumar has accomplished in Bihar. Nitish Kumar has built Bihar.” This statement comes in the wake of Kumar winning his fifth term in the 2025 state elections, leading the National Democratic Alliance to secure a two-thirds majority.

Nitish Kumar’s Political Journey

Nitish Kumar has had a diverse and impactful political career, beginning as a member of the Janata Dal and becoming a Member of the Legislative Assembly in 1985. In the 1990s, he co-founded the Samata Party with George Fernandes. Kumar showcased his political acumen by serving as a Union Minister and being elected to the Lok Sabha in 1996. He made a substantial mark when the NDA won control of the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 2005 and achieved a landslide victory during the 2010 state elections. His relationship with the BJP has been complex; after a breakup in 2013, he realigned with the Rashtriya Janata Dal and Congress, only to return to the NDA in 2017. Following another phase with the Mahagathbandhan, Kumar rejoined the NDA Assembly in early 2024, eventually winning the 2025 election decisively, thus solidifying his status as Bihar’s longest-serving Chief Minister.
