Why BSNL’s Newly Launched Satellite Phone is Priced Higher Than iPhone 17 Pro?

The CSR Journal Magazine

BSNL has introduced a satellite phone in India, with a price tag of Rs 1,34,166, which surpasses that of the recently released iPhone 17 Pro. This pricing may initially seem surprising, especially given that the iPhone boasts capabilities such as photography, app functionality, and limited satellite connectivity for emergencies. However, the BSNL satellite phone is designed for a different market altogether.

Unlike high-end smartphones, this device acts as a specialised communication tool tailored for professionals working in remote areas, emergency situations, or locations where traditional mobile networks are unavailable. It connects directly to satellites, which allows users to make calls and send SMS, even in the absence of cellular coverage.

The new satellite phone is part of BSNL’s Global Satellite Phone Service (GSPS). It has unique features such as a rugged build, extended battery life, voice calling, and an SOS function, making it ideal for use in various challenging environments.

Reasons for the High Cost

The primary factor contributing to the satellite phone’s steep price is the advanced technology involved. Unlike smartphones that link to nearby mobile towers, the BSNL satellite phone connects with satellites managed by international providers like Inmarsat. This direct connectivity necessitates specialised hardware and satellite communication equipment, which are significantly more expensive to produce than conventional smartphone components.

Another driving factor for the elevated cost is the production volume. Satellite phones are manufactured in considerably lower quantities compared to regular smartphones, resulting in higher manufacturing expenses. Additionally, the cost of usage does not stop with the purchase of the device; users must subscribe to expensive satellite communication plans, which increase the overall expenditure.

BSNL began offering its satellite communications service to both public and commercial users in January 2018. This service includes encrypted voice calling and SMS under the oversight of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) regulations. Subsequently updated tariff plans this year entailed monthly commercial rates beginning at Rs 5,835. Government subscribers can opt for plans starting at Rs 3,500, which offer a designated amount of free talk time before incurring additional charges.

Comparison with Apple’s Satellite Feature

The capabilities of the BSNL satellite phone distinctly differ from the emergency satellite feature available on certain Apple iPhones. While iPhones provide an Emergency SOS service via satellite, this feature is limited to circumstances where users lack mobile or Wi-Fi connectivity. It mainly facilitates connection to emergency services or allows users to share their location via satellites.

In contrast, the BSNL satellite phone is a dedicated device built for regular voice communication and SMS through satellite networks, independent of mobile towers. This device supports full-time satellite communication, primarily designed for use in remote areas rather than serving as an occasional emergency resource.

In essence, while Apple’s satellite feature is tailored for emergency situations, the BSNL satellite phone is constructed for continuous use in locations beyond the reach of standard telecommunications infrastructure.

Restrictions on Purchase

Purchasing the BSNL satellite phone is subject to stringent regulations in India. Prospective buyers must obtain explicit approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) before acquiring or using a satellite phone. Engaging with satellite phones without necessary authorisation could result in legal consequences.

This regulatory framework underscores the necessity of managing satellite communications, given their potential implications for national security and usage in remote territories.

As the BSNL satellite phone enters the market, it aims to cater to specific professional needs in challenging environments, offering a robust alternative to conventional communication devices.
