Who is Gwalior CSP Hina Khan, Who Shut Up Mob With ‘Jai Shri Ram’ Chants?

The CSR Journal Magazine

A heated altercation broke out in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior between senior High Court lawyer Anil Mishra and City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Hina Khan after police prevented a religious event at a Hanuman temple due to prohibitory orders in effect. The incident occurred in the wake of heightened tensions following a dispute over an Ambedkar statue, prompting Section 144 to be imposed citywide.

Lawyer Confronts Police Over Ramayan Recitation

The controversy began when Mishra, a former Bar Association president, and his supporters arrived at the Siddheshwar Temple with a tent to conduct a Sundar Kand recital. However, police under CSP Khan’s command returned the tent materials, citing the district collector’s ban on public gatherings under Section 144.

Angered by the action, Mishra accused CSP Khan of being “anti-Sanatan” and claimed that the police were suppressing religious freedom. His supporters began chanting “Jai Shri Ram” slogans, creating a volatile atmosphere.

CSP Khan Joins Slogans, Diffuses Tensions

In a surprising yet composed response, CSP Hina Khan, a Muslim officer, raised her fist and joined the crowd in chanting “Jai Shri Ram” three times. Looking directly at the protesters, she calmly said, “Aur kuch?” (Anything else?). Her confident demeanor stunned the crowd, effectively diffusing what could have turned into a violent confrontation.

“Jai Shri Ram, Jai Shri Ram, Jai Shri Ram…ab bolo,” on-duty CSP Hina Khan slammed the Hindu groups attempting to bully her after the police refused them permission to hold ‘Sundar Kand’ paath to avert law and order situation.

Khan stated later that her action was meant to calm tensions, not to challenge religious sentiment. “If chanting God’s name can maintain peace, I will chant too. But no one can use it to create disorder,” she told the media.

Background and Public Reaction

Hina Khan, a 2016-batch civil services officer, is currently CSP of the University Circle in Gwalior. She hails from Guna district and joined the police force in 2018 after working in the GST department. Her handling of the situation has been widely praised on social media, with many lauding her sense of duty, discipline, and cultural sensitivity.

She reiterated that her actions were in line with administrative orders and aimed solely at maintaining law and order. The temple priest later confirmed that police had instructed them not to allow any event without official approval, and they complied.

Despite facing religious provocation, CSP Hina Khan stood firm, upholding constitutional duty over communal pressure. Her calm yet assertive response prevented the situation from escalating, making her a symbol of professionalism in the face of rising tensions.
