WHO Chief Raises Alarm Over Escalating Ebola Outbreak

The CSR Journal Magazine

The head of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has expressed significant concern regarding the rapidly escalating Ebola outbreak in Central and East Africa. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that both the speed and scale of infections present a serious threat to public health. During his address at the World Health Assembly held in Geneva, he noted the outbreak has reportedly resulted in hundreds of suspected cases and over 130 fatalities.

According to data provided by health authorities, there are at least 516 suspected Ebola cases in the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), alongside 131 suspected deaths linked to the outbreak. Confirmed cases include 33 in the DRC and two in neighbouring Uganda. Tedros acknowledged that these numbers might change as health teams increase their surveillance and testing efforts.

Understanding Ebola and Its Transmission

Ebola is a severe viral illness typically associated with symptoms such as fever, severe weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle pain, and, in acute cases, both internal and external bleeding. The virus is transmitted through direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of infected individuals, as well as contaminated objects. It is imperative to combat transmission through rigorous detection, isolation of cases, and contact tracing, despite the existence of vaccines and experimental treatments for certain strains.

Health officials are particularly alarmed by this outbreak, as it involves the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. This strain, while less common, poses significant risks and can easily spread through contaminated surfaces and direct contact with infected bodily fluids. Cases have emerged in densely populated urban areas like Goma in eastern Congo and Kampala in Uganda, intensifying the challenge of controlling the outbreak.

The outbreak has also impacted the Ituri province, an area affected by ongoing conflict, complicating efforts for health workers to track infections effectively. Infection among healthcare workers has been noted, raising serious concerns about the adequacy of infection control measures in medical facilities.

WHO’s Response and Recommendations to Affected Countries

In response to the escalating crisis, the WHO has approved $3.9 million in emergency funding to assist national authorities in bolstering outbreak control strategies. An emergency committee of international experts is currently convening to evaluate the situation and provide the WHO with technical guidance. The organisation has urged countries affected by the outbreak to activate their emergency management systems and enhance their surveillance capabilities.

The WHO has recommended that both Congo and Uganda implement stronger contact tracing measures, expand laboratory testing services, and enhance infection prevention protocols in hospitals. Training healthcare workers on proper use of protective equipment and increasing public awareness about the disease are critical steps to manage the outbreak.

In addition, the organisation emphasised that traditional funerals can amplify Ebola transmission if appropriate safety protocols are not observed. To mitigate this risk, it suggested that burials should be managed by trained personnel while still respecting local customs and family involvement. Individuals confirmed to have Ebola or in close contact with infected persons are advised against international travel until they receive medical clearance.

While stressing the importance of vigilance, the WHO cautioned against imposing blanket travel bans or closing borders, aiming to prevent unnecessary panic throughout the affected regions. The seriousness of this outbreak extends beyond borders, highlighting the need for immediate preparedness in neighbouring countries.
