At the Swachh Survekshan 2024–25 Awards ceremony held in the national capital, Indore secured the title of India’s cleanest city for an unprecedented eighth consecutive year. President Droupadi Murmu presented the awards, with Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, MoS Tokhan Sahu, and MoHUA Secretary Srinivas K in attendance.
New Clean City League Launched, Indore on Top
For the first time, a new category called “Super Swachh League Cities” was introduced, aimed at highlighting cities with consistent top-tier performance. Indore was ranked number one in this elite group, reinforcing its position as a leader in urban sanitation. Surat, Navi Mumbai, and Vijayawada also placed highly in the million-plus population category.
In the 3 to 10 lakh population group, Noida claimed the cleanest city title, while Chandigarh and Mysore followed. Among smaller towns, New Delhi Municipal Council, Vita in Maharashtra, and Panchgani were recognised as the cleanest in their respective size categories.
The Swachh Survekshan awards, launched in 2016 under the Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban, have grown from an initial survey of 73 cities to covering over 4,500 urban areas this year. The 2024–25 edition involved more than 3,000 field assessors and evaluated over 11 lakh households across the country.
Govt: 11 Lakh Homes Surveyed in Cleanliness Drive
According to a government release, “With an unwavering commitment to inclusivity and transparency, the initiative encompassed the assessment of over 11 lakh households, reflecting a comprehensive and far-reaching approach to understanding urban living and sanitation on a national scale.”
The methodology used for this assessment was based on 10 parameters and 54 specific indicators, offering a detailed evaluation of waste management, public feedback, and service delivery in urban India. This year’s survey also saw an impressive 14 crore citizens participate through mobile apps, social media, and public feedback platforms like MyGov and the Swachhata App.
The “Super League” initiative was proposed in September 2024 by Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. It rewards cities that have made it to the top three rankings at least once in the last three years and are among the top 20% in their population category this year. A total of 78 awards were distributed during the event.
