Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari officially launched the ‘Saarthi’ scheme during an event at Madhusudan Pal Chowdhury School in Howrah on September 29. This initiative aims to provide bicycles to students across various schools in the state, thereby easing their commute to educational institutions. The launch event took place under the jurisdiction of the Bentra police station, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing students’ access to school.

During the inauguration, Chief Minister Adhikari took the opportunity to assess the academic and infrastructural facilities available at the school. He evaluated the quality of the mid-day meal arrangements and engaged directly with the students, sharing a meal with them as part of the event. His participation aimed to illustrate the importance of nutritious meals in supporting students’ educational experiences.

Changes in Educational Support Initiatives

In his address, Chief Minister Adhikari highlighted a shift in governmental policy regarding student support. He revealed that the initiative to provide Rs 11,000 to Class 11 students for mobile phone purchases will be replaced by a new policy aimed at supplying educational tablets. This change, intended to promote educational use while reducing screen time with mobile phones, is estimated to cost an additional Rs 10,000. Adhikari emphasised that the focus will now be on educational resources that aid learning instead of consumer technology.

The Chief Minister also expressed concerns regarding the previous bicycle distribution system, suggesting that bicycles were sourced from Ludhiana and assembled locally. He indicated that past practices would be discontinued to ensure a more responsible use of public funds. The emphasis on transparency and accountability was made clear as the new scheme is implemented.

In conjunction with the bicycle distribution, the Headmaster of Madhusudan Pal Chowdhury School confirmed that the event had been pre-planned. He stated that the launch of the ‘Saarthi’ scheme allows for more efficient transportation for students. Bicycles were distributed to participants during the ceremony, marking a significant step in the school’s engagement with community welfare.

Mid-Day Meal Details

The Chief Minister’s participation in the mid-day meal underscored his commitment to student welfare. The Headmaster clarified that the meal provided on that day was part of the standard menu, which included rice, dal, a potato-soybean dish, and chutney. He noted that the meal was prepared in larger quantities than usual to accommodate the attendees, including the Chief Minister and other guests.

Through routine assessments of the mid-day meal programme, the school aims to ensure nutritional standards are maintained.
