The alleged gang-rape of a second-year medical student in Durgapur has escalated into a major political issue, drawing the direct attention of the state’s highest office. West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose departed for Durgapur on Monday to meet the victim, personally expressing his concern over the incident and the state’s law and order situation.
Before his departure, the Governor told reporters that he intended to speak to the victim to “understand the situation firsthand.” He assured that “strict action would be taken against those responsible,” while stating he would first assess the law and order situation after meeting the medical student. The Governor’s visit is seen as an effort to ascertain the facts and reassure the family amidst escalating political tensions.
Five Accused Arrested; Police Vow Full Cooperation
Meanwhile, Asansol Durgapur Police Commissioner Sunil Kumar Choudhury announced that all five accused have been arrested. He asserted that the police are providing “full cooperation” to the victim and her family.
During a press conference, Commissioner Choudhury detailed the support offered, including providing officers’ contact numbers to the family for urgent needs. Police protection has been arranged for the victim at the private hospital where she is undergoing treatment, and the family is being regularly informed about the investigation’s progress.
Though police offered protection to the family, the victim’s father reportedly declined the offer. The Commissioner maintained that the investigation is proceeding correctly to ensure the perpetrators face strict punishment.
