Deepinder Goyal Launches Temple Wearable, Claims Better Heart Rate

The CSR Journal Magazine

Deepinder Goyal’s Temple wearable is on the verge of its launch, with pre-orders scheduled to commence in India at 9:30 PM IST today. Just hours prior to the opening of the booking window, Goyal took to X to assert a significant claim regarding the device. He stated that Temple can track heart rate with greater precision than several prominent wearables, including the Apple Watch Series 12. This assertion is particularly noteworthy as the company claims its device excels in high-intensity workout scenarios, where accurate heart rate monitoring is often challenging.

The device is priced at Rs 85,000, as indicated by an early-access invitation released by the company. Temple operates on a made-to-order basis, and customers can expect delivery approximately three months after the purchase date. Additionally, buyers have the option to request a refund until the product is dispatched.

Claims of Superior Heart Rate Accuracy

In his announcement, Goyal mentioned that one of Temple’s objectives is to establish itself as the “ultimate wearable for elite performance athletes.” He emphasised the importance of accurate heart rate tracking, particularly in zones 4 and 5, which are crucial for professional athletes. He noted, “You would think accurate HR (Heart Rate) tracking is a solved problem. It is not.” This highlights the ongoing challenges in achieving precise heart rate measurements during intense physical activities.

To validate Temple’s claims, the company conducted a comparison with five leading wearables, using a Polar H10 chest strap as a benchmark. Notably, Temple employed a unique method by taping the chest strap to the user’s chest, as Goyal pointed out that conventional chest straps may lose contact during vigorous activities, potentially leading to missed heartbeats.

The testing involved assessing the devices from a resting state to maximum exertion, with readings compared second by second. Goyal asserted that the other leading wearables lagged significantly behind Temple in this study, with the Apple Watch Series 12 reportedly being the closest competitor.

Reasons for Temple’s Alleged Accuracy Advantage

Goyal elaborated on the reasons he believes Temple holds an edge over traditional wearables. One primary factor is its adhesive design, which enables the device to adhere directly to the skin. The company contends that the testing conditions in the lab closely mimic how users will wear the device in real-life scenarios.

Another factor is the positioning of the device, which attaches to the side of the head, situated between the forehead and ear. According to Goyal, this location is over a major artery and does not impede blood flow during intense physical activity, unlike other body sites. He stated, “We tested the same sensor at four body sites. The temple was the most accurate of the four.” This claim underscores the unique approach Temple is taking in its design and functionality.

The company has made the full research paper and data available on its website. However, it is important to note that these findings originate from Temple’s own studies, and independent researchers are currently undertaking further investigations. Goyal has also extended an invitation for others to replicate the research under varying conditions, expressing the company’s willingness to fund such efforts.
