“We Want Justice”: Slain Sena (UBT) Leader Pradeep Purnekar’s Family Demands Action

The CSR Journal Magazine

The family of Pradeep Purnekar, a local leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT) who was shot dead, is seeking justice from Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Sanjay Khangde, Purnekar’s father-in-law, expressed his despair regarding the rising crime rates in the region during an interview with ANI. He stated his belief that it is imperative for those responsible for the attack to be brought to justice.

Khangde remarked, “We deserve justice,” urging the political leaders to take notice of the alarming increase in violence, particularly involving young individuals carrying weapons. He emphasized the necessity for swift action and accountability in the case, insisting that the actions of the perpetrators must have repercussions. His plea highlights a growing concern within the community regarding safety and law enforcement effectiveness.

Reflecting on the grim news of Purnekar’s death, Khangde recounted receiving a call from his daughter about the attack at 10:00 AM on that fateful day. Within minutes, news reports confirmed Purnekar had succumbed to his injuries. He has been supporting his daughter and the deceased’s family in their time of grief and distress.

Community Response and Last Rites Suspended

Purnekar’s brother, Jainath, stated that the family would refrain from performing the last rites until the suspects are arrested. He declared, “The last rites will be performed when the culprits are caught,” firmly establishing their stance on the pursuit of justice before concluding personal rituals.

The incident has resonated deeply within the local Shiv Sena (UBT) community. MP Sanjay Raut condemned the killing as tragic, characterising Purnekar as a dedicated member of the party. He voiced concerns regarding the law-and-order situation in Thane and called for accountability from the police. Raut emphasised that political disputes may have played a role in the tragic event, referencing conflicts Purnekar had with local political figures, including Meenakshi Shinde.

Raut further alleged that Purnekar had been vocal about issues related to the builder lobby and had raised complaints against a drug racket. This highlights the precarious nature of the political landscape in the region and suggests potential motivations behind the attack.

Eyewitness Accounts of the Shooting

An eyewitness, Renu Prajapati, recounted the moments surrounding the shooting. She was at her shop next to Purnekar’s office when she heard loud noises. Initially believing that a short circuit had occurred, she opened her shop gate to investigate the source of the sound. However, upon realising the gravity of the situation, she took her daughter outside for safety.

The police have initiated an investigation to apprehend the culprits and uncover the motive behind Purnekar’s killing. They are actively working to piece together information from the community in order to bring justice to Purnekar’s family and to address the broader concerns about safety and crime in Thane.
