Heavy Rain Leads to School Holiday in Chennai and Three Other Tamil Nadu Districts

The CSR Journal Magazine

Heavy rain has affected Chennai and several northern districts of Tamil Nadu, leading to the announcement of a school holiday for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu on Wednesday. This decision was made in response to the adverse weather conditions, as reported. The rainfall began on Tuesday evening and has continued due to the active northeast monsoon in the region.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued warnings regarding further rainfall in the coming 48 hours. The weather office’s latest bulletin indicates that a low-pressure area is expected to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal, close to the Tamil Nadu coast, on Wednesday. This development is anticipated to intensify the existing weather conditions in the area.

Additionally, a cyclonic circulation, which was previously located over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the northern Tamil Nadu coast, has now shifted to the southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjacent Tamil Nadu coast. This shift is likely to contribute to the formation of a low-pressure area in the region within the next 24 hours.

Forecast and Expected Rainfall

According to meteorological forecasts, heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted in isolated areas of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Ramanathapuram districts. The forecasts also extend to the Union Territories of Puducherry and Karaikal. Local authorities are preparing for the potential impact of these weather conditions, ensuring that necessary precautions are in place.

The weather office has emphasised the importance of being vigilant during this period, as the heavy rainfall could lead to localised flooding and other disruptions. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather reports and heed any warnings issued by local authorities.

In light of these predictions, the Greater Chennai Corporation has initiated road repairs across various areas at an estimated cost of Rs 21.80 crore. These repairs are being carried out following directives from the Chief Minister to address issues arising from the recent heavy rainfall. The repairs involve the use of concrete and tar mixtures in zones 1 to 15 of the city.

Relief Measures and Community Support

As part of the relief efforts, the Greater Chennai Corporation has distributed 6,000 food packets to residents affected by the rain in Virugambakkam on Wednesday morning. This initiative aims to provide immediate assistance to those in need during the ongoing adverse weather conditions. Community support is crucial at this time, as many individuals may be facing difficulties due to the heavy rainfall.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely, with a focus on ensuring the safety and well-being of residents in the affected districts. The school closures are part of broader safety measures being implemented in response to the weather conditions. Parents and guardians are advised to remain informed about the status of schools and any further announcements from local education authorities.

With the forecast indicating more heavy rainfall, the Greater Chennai Corporation and other local agencies are committed to ongoing road repairs and relief measures. They are working diligently to mitigate the impact of the rain on daily life and ensure that residents receive the necessary support during this challenging period.
