Tejas Thackeray’s Entry into Politics Signals Potential Shift in Leadership

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tejas Thackeray, the youngest member of the prominent Thackeray family, has made his initial foray into politics, raising expectations for a more significant role in public life. The 31-year-old made his first political appearance on Sunday at Shivaji Park in Mumbai, joining his brother Aaditya at a protest against the SIR. This event marks a notable moment for the Thackeray family, as they navigate the political landscape following the party’s recent challenges.

Context of Political Changes

The political atmosphere in India has been shifting, particularly following widespread protests led by Generation Z. This has prompted mainstream political parties to reconsider their leadership structures and engage with younger voters. Within the Shiv Sena (UBT), insiders suggest that Tejas is poised to take on a more prominent role in the coming months. A party leader noted that the timing of his appearance coincided with the auspicious beginning of Navratri, further emphasising the significance of this moment for Tejas.

The Thackeray family is still dealing with the repercussions of the 2022 split initiated by Eknath Shinde. Tejas’s entry is seen as a strategic move to energise the party’s base and strengthen its connection with younger constituents. Aaditya Thackeray’s recent speeches at protests have garnered him a following among the youth in Mumbai, further enhancing the family’s political relevance.

While Aaditya, aged 36, was introduced into politics by Balasaheb Thackeray in 2010, Tejas has largely remained out of the limelight until now. His background as a wildlife researcher, focused on documenting new species, has set him apart from his family’s more traditional political paths. When questioned about his political aspirations, he expressed contentment with his current role, although he did not dismiss future political ambitions.

Family Dynamics and Future Prospects

Sources within the Shiv Sena (UBT) indicate that Tejas’s mother, Rashmi Thackeray, is keen on integrating him into the party, especially in light of Uddhav Thackeray’s health concerns. Additionally, Varun Sardesai, Rashmi’s nephew and a newly-elected lawmaker from Bandra East, represents a new generation within the party. The recent protests have also seen Raj Thackeray’s son, Amit Thackeray, becoming more publicly active, further highlighting the emergence of a younger political class within the Thackeray family.

During the protest on Sunday, all three young Thackerays addressed the crowd, presenting a united front. Sanjay Raut, a spokesperson for the Shiv Sena (UBT), welcomed Tejas’s potential entry into politics, although he clarified that Tejas has not yet participated in formal party meetings. Party members have praised his intelligence and quick wit, drawing comparisons to Balasaheb Thackeray.

Deputy leader Vishakha Raut expressed optimism about the potential collaboration between Tejas and Aaditya, suggesting that their combined strengths could benefit the party. Another senior leader, MLC Anil Parab, remarked that Tejas’s appearance at the protest was unplanned but showcased his political acumen, likening him to his grandfather in terms of assertiveness.

Tejas Thackeray’s Background and Advocacy

Tejas Thackeray is an alumnus of Bombay Scottish and Jai Hind College and has established the Thackeray Wildlife Foundation in Mumbai. His foundation has documented 116 species across India, Nepal, Congo, and Angola, with 104 of those discoveries made in India. Recently, he reached out to Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Bhupendra Yadav, advocating for legal protections for the endangered Borna snakehead fish, which faces threats from illegal trade.

In his letter, Tejas requested that the Channa amphibeus be classified under the highest protection status of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and called for stringent measures against its illegal capture and trafficking. His proactive stance on wildlife conservation reflects a commitment to environmental issues, which may resonate with younger voters as he navigates his potential political career.
