“We Lost in The Power Play”: Shreyas Iyer as PBKS Faces Sixth Consecutive Loss

The CSR Journal Magazine

In an intense encounter at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala, Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer reflected on his team’s struggles during the powerplay, which he believes significantly impacted their performance against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). This match, held on May 17, saw RCB emerging victorious by a margin of 23 runs, allowing them to become the first team to qualify for the playoffs in the IPL 2026 season. Iyer acknowledged RCB’s strong batting display and commended the impressive bowling efforts of Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who effectively restricted PBKS despite their efforts to maintain a competitive scoring rate.

Following the match, Iyer expressed disappointment with the early losses his team suffered during the chase of a formidable target of 223 runs. The PBKS innings faltered after losing critical wickets, with the captain himself falling to a catch behind the stumps. He noted that losing three key batters in the powerplay set a negative tone for the rest of the match. “Our defeat was primarily sealed in the powerplay. We lost three vital wickets early on, which left us in a difficult position,” Iyer stated.

Despite the setback, Iyer highlighted the resilience shown by players such as Shashank Singh and Marcus Stoinis, who contributed valuable runs amid the difficult circumstances. “Even at that point, we maintained a good scoring pace, reaching nearly ten runs an over, but the remarkable bowling from Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar proved to be crucial,” he added.

The loss marked the sixth consecutive defeat for the Shreyas Iyer-led team, raising concerns over their chances of making it to the playoffs. As they prepare for their next match against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), who have already been eliminated from playoff contention, the PBKS squad faces immense pressure. Iyer emphasized the importance of focusing on the upcoming game, saying, “I remain positive and maintain a forward-looking approach. This match is now behind us. We must concentrate on the upcoming challenge.”

The clash against LSG represents a critical opportunity for PBKS to turn their fortunes around and revive their hopes of playoff contention. As the tournament progresses, the performance of the team in this upcoming match will be pivotal in determining their fate in the league.
