India has appointed veteran diplomat Vipul as its next ambassador to Saudi Arabia, a role perceived as vital due to the Gulf nation’s increasing regional influence. The announcement was made on June 3, 2026, by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The appointment is strategically significant, corresponding with the ongoing geopolitical complexities in West Asia.

Experience and Qualifications of the New Ambassador

Vipul, who is part of the 1998 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), is currently serving as India’s envoy to Qatar. His extensive service in the region equips him well for this forthcoming role. The MEA stated that he is expected to take up his new assignment shortly, drawing on his rich experience from previous postings.

Throughout his diplomatic career, Vipul has been associated with various important missions across the globe, including stints in Cairo, Colombo, Geneva, and Dubai. His diverse portfolio has included responsibilities in political and commercial relations, development cooperation, disarmament, international security, and media affairs. His extensive background is anticipated to significantly benefit his new posting.

Moreover, prior to his recent role, he served as Joint Secretary in the MEA from 2014 to 2017. This position allowed him to make substantial contributions to policy formulation from New Delhi. Following this, he was the Consul General of India in Dubai from 2017 to 2020, enhancing his understanding of Gulf politics and economics.

Educational Background and Area of Expertise

In addition to his diplomatic experience, Vipul has a solid educational foundation. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, in 1994, and holds an MBA from the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad. His academic credentials complement his extensive professional background, providing him a well-rounded perspective on international relations.

Following his posting in Dubai, he returned to India and took up the role of Joint Secretary (Gulf) from 2020 to 2023. This position further solidified his expertise in West Asian affairs and prepared him for his role as India’s ambassador in Qatar since August 2023.

Vipul’s comprehensive knowledge of Gulf matters is expected to play a crucial role in advancing the strategic partnership between India and Saudi Arabia.
