Uttar Pradesh to Mandate Expiry Dates on Eggs from April 1 for Food Safety

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a new regulation requiring egg producers to stamp each egg with its expiry date beginning April 1. This initiative aims to enhance food safety and consumer awareness. Along with the expiry date, the eggs will also display the date they were laid, according to information from the animal husbandry department.

Consequences for Non-Compliance

Traders and farmers who fail to comply with this regulation may face severe penalties. The enforcement of this rule could result in the destruction of non-compliant produce or the labeling of eggs as “not fit for human consumption.” Officials from the animal husbandry department have emphasized the importance of adherence to this new guideline.

Safe Consumption Guidelines

Research indicates that eggs remain safe for consumption for up to two weeks after being laid if stored at an ambient temperature of around 30 degrees Celsius. Alternatively, they can be safely consumed for up to five weeks when stored at temperatures between 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. This highlights the critical need for proper storage conditions to maintain egg freshness and safety for consumers.

Storage Regulations and Challenges

According to the regulations set forth by the Food Safety and Drug Administration, eggs must not be stored in cold storage alongside vegetables, as each requires different temperature conditions. Currently, the infrastructure to support proper cold storage for eggs is limited, with only two facilities available in the state, located in Agra and Jhansi. This existing limitation may pose challenges for producers in complying with the new stamping requirements.

Consumer Awareness Initiatives

Additional Chief Secretary in the animal husbandry and dairy sector, Mukesh Meshram, noted that previous compliance with food safety regulations has been lacking and that many consumers are unaware of these rules. The introduction of expiry date stamping is intended to educate consumers about safe egg consumption practices and promote better compliance among producers.
