The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi has documented a total of 1,083 dengue cases and 355 malaria cases up to October 31 this year, according to a report from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Notably, there have been no reported fatalities linked to either disease. The latest figures indicate that during the week ending October 31, the capital saw 90 new dengue cases and 18 new malaria cases, as per the MCD Public Health Department’s weekly update.

Among the dengue cases reported this year, the MCD areas accounted for 964 cases, while the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) recorded 13 cases. Additionally, 87 cases were identified in the Delhi Cantonment area and 19 by the Railways. In comparison, the previous week, which ended on October 24, saw 92 dengue cases and 19 malaria cases.

Distribution of Cases Across Regions

In terms of malaria, out of the total 355 cases reported in Delhi, 346 were from MCD areas, three from Delhi Cantonment, and six from the Railways. Notably, no malaria cases were reported in the NDMC area. Among the various MCD zones, Central Delhi recorded the highest number of dengue cases, totalling 135, followed closely by Najafgarh with 129 cases and South with 115 cases.

For malaria, the City-SP zone reported the highest incidence, with 53 cases, while Central and South zones each reported 49 cases. The West zone recorded 35 malaria cases. The report also highlighted that Delhi has seen 39 chikungunya cases until October 31, which includes one case reported during the most recent week.

These statistics reflect ongoing public health challenges in the capital, necessitating continued vigilance and preventive measures.

Preventive Measures and Public Health Initiatives

The MCD has maintained its efforts to control mosquito populations through various measures. These include the spraying of insecticides, inspections of residential areas for mosquito breeding sites, and issuing notices to residents where breeding conditions are identified. Between January 1 and October 31, the civic body reported that it had sprayed 38.27 lakh houses and conducted over 3.66 crore visits to check for mosquito breeding.

During these inspections, over 2.21 lakh houses were found to have conditions conducive to mosquito breeding, prompting the issuance of more than 1.48 lakh legal notices to residents. Furthermore, the report indicated that a total of 30,000 prosecutions were initiated during this period, underscoring the MCD’s commitment to tackling the mosquito-borne diseases affecting the city.

These proactive measures are critical in mitigating the spread of dengue, malaria, and chikungunya, particularly during the peak transmission seasons. The MCD continues to encourage public participation in these initiatives to ensure a healthier environment for all residents.
