Uttar Pradesh on Red Alert after Operation Sindoor, UP Police to coordinate with Defence units

A red alert was declared in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday after the Indian Army’s targeted strike on terror hideouts in Pakistan and PoK under ‘Operation Sindoor’. Uttar Pradesh’s Director General of Police (DGP) issued a notification on social media saying UP Police has been instructed to coordinate with Defence units and strengthen the security of vital installations.

“Red Alert declared in Uttar Pradesh following #OperationSindoor – the Indian Army’s targeted strike on terror hideouts. All UP Police field formations have been instructed to coordinate with Defence units and strengthen the security of vital installations,” said DGP, UP in a post on X.

What is Operation Sindoor?

Over 80 terrorists were reportedly killed in a series of attacks carried out by Indian armed forces on terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) early on May 7, Wednesday. In the cross-border action, which has been christened “Operation Sindoor”, nine facilities linked to banned terrorist outfits Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and Hizbul Mujahideen were targeted.

The attacks, which were carried out at 1:44 am. Four of the nine sites were located inside Pakistan, while the remaining five were in POK. However, no Pakistani military installations were targeted.

Operation Sindoor comes in retaliation to the April 22 terror attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam that left 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen, mostly tourists dead. Soon after the Pahalgam terror attack which took place on April 22, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had vowed to pursue the perpetrators of the attack and those who took part in its conspiracy to inflict punishment to them “beyond their imagination”.

Operation Sindoor comes ahead of Nationwide Mock Drill on May 7

India’s Operation Sindoor come hours before a planned security mock drill across the country for “effective civil defence in the event of a hostile attack”, across 244 districts. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has instructed all states to carry out mock drills in view of the “new and complex threats” that have emerged lately.

The mock drills across the country will be conducted on Wednesday, May 7 to evaluate defence preparedness across India’s rural and urban areas. The mock drill will include air raid sirens, blackout protocols, and public training, with officials urging citizens to keep torches, candles, and cash ready.

As per the MHA, the mock drill aims to train civilians, students, and others in civil defense techniques for protection during a hostile attack. It is also aimed at checking the readiness of control rooms, shadow control centres and evaluate performance of air raid warning systems.

Mock drill across all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh

A full-scale mock drill involving civil and police administration, fire services and disaster response force will be organised in all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, instead of 19 specific ones, Director General of Police Prashant Kumar on Tuesday.

“We had received a directive from the union government to conduct the mock drill in 19 districts that were put under various categories. Narura (Bulandshahr) comes under Category I, Baghpat and Muzaffarnagar under Category III while 13 other districts fall under Category II, including Lucknow, Agra, Prayagraj, Bareilly, Ghaziabad, Gorakhpur, Mathura, Meerut, Moradabad, Saharanpur, Varanasi, Jhansi and Kanpur along with four other specified places – Bakshi Ka Talab (Lucknow), Sarsawa (Saharanpur) and Mughalsarai (Chandauli). Now, the directives have been issued to all districts in this regard,” the DGP said.
