The CSR Journal Magazine

Details of the Scheme

The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has sanctioned cashless medical treatment of up to Rs 5 lakh for 1,70,366 non-teaching employees linked to secondary and basic education institutions. This decision was made during a Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, as reported by the Press Trust of India. The initiative aims to enhance healthcare access for non-teaching staff and their eligible family members, thereby addressing a significant gap in medical benefits within the educational sector.

The state government is expected to allocate approximately Rs 51.11 crore annually to cover insurance premiums associated with this scheme. Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna confirmed that the decision aligns with a prior announcement made by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, which aimed to extend similar medical facilities to teaching staff.

Beneficiaries of the Initiative

According to Khanna, the scheme will benefit 48,062 employees from the secondary education department, with an estimated annual expenditure of Rs 14.41 crore on insurance premiums for this group. The beneficiaries include non-teaching personnel from aided and unaided secondary schools, Sanskrit schools, and various offices and institutions operating under the Samagra Shiksha programme.

Additionally, the Cabinet has approved a similar medical facility for 1,22,304 non-teaching employees associated with basic education. This category includes clerical staff working in institutions governed by the Basic Education Council, aided junior high schools, unaided schools, and state and district project offices. The annual expenditure on insurance premiums for this group is projected to be Rs 36.69 crore.

Each beneficiary will receive a government contribution of Rs 3,000 towards their annual insurance premium under both proposals. This financial support aims to alleviate the burden of healthcare costs for non-teaching staff and their families, thereby promoting a healthier workforce within the education sector.

Broader Implications of the Decision

The Cabinet’s decision to extend healthcare benefits to non-teaching personnel is part of a broader initiative to enhance the educational infrastructure and support systems across Uttar Pradesh. Khanna indicated that this move is designed to ensure that all employees within the state’s education system have access to adequate healthcare services.

In addition to the healthcare measures, the Cabinet also approved proposals aimed at improving educational infrastructure, increasing grain storage capacity, and promoting investment in the sector. These initiatives are expected to contribute positively to the overall educational landscape in Uttar Pradesh.

Overall, the two schemes will provide cashless medical treatment of up to Rs 5 lakh to a total of 1,70,366 non-teaching education employees and their eligible dependants. The government’s commitment to spending approximately Rs 51.11 crore annually on insurance premiums underscores its dedication to enhancing the welfare of education staff in the state.
