The state of Uttar Pradesh is experiencing a significant shift in the perception and role of women in society. The transformation from merely viewing women as symbols of respect to recognising them as crucial drivers of economic progress is vital for the development of the region. An assessment of societal growth often stems from the engagement of women in various sectors, which in turn influences the economy at large.

In recent years, the participation of women in the workforce has seen a notable increase, particularly during the tenure of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. This upliftment is not solely reflected in employment statistics but is indicative of a broader awakening in social consciousness. Women are now actively sharing economic responsibilities within their families and contributing to community development.

Women are establishing their identities beyond domestic roles, stepping into various fields, including agriculture, corporate sectors, and entrepreneurship. The significant jump in women’s labour force participation from 12 per cent to over 36 per cent is a remarkable milestone for the state. This development is rooted in a concerted effort to provide education, security, and opportunities for women.

The government has launched various initiatives aimed at supporting women’s education and empowerment. The Mukhyamantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana, for instance, provides financial assistance of Rs 25,000 from the birth of a daughter until her graduation. This programme is part of a broader strategy to ensure that girls have equal access to education and opportunities, thereby preventing economic disparity based on gender.

The state has also undertaken efforts to enhance security for women, which is foundational for encouraging their participation in the workforce. The rise in the number of women in police roles from 10,000 to 44,000 signifies a commitment to ensuring a safer environment for women. Furthermore, initiatives such as Mission Shakti Centres are contributing to creating a framework for women’s empowerment.

Economic self-reliance has emerged as another integral focus, with several programmes designed to integrate women into technology and entrepreneurship. Ventures like Lakhpati Didi and Drone Didi are connecting women with domains that were historically male-dominated, fostering a new ecosystem of female entrepreneurs.

Recognising Women’s Contributions to Society

The importance of women’s recognition in societal roles is underscored through events such as the Working Women’s Felicitation Ceremony in Varanasi, which saw the participation of over 10,000 women from varied backgrounds. This gathering not only highlighted the collective effort of women in nurturing societal foundations but also marked a significant shift in acknowledging their contributions to the community.

The economic impact of women’s involvement is evident with women leading numerous startups and being key players in over 96 lakh MSME units. Additionally, the substantial engagement of women in milk producer organisations showcases their transition from consumers to vital contributors within the economic framework.

Efforts to ensure women’s empowerment include measures to provide ownership rights, with over 1 crore Gharounis (housing units) attributed to women, signifying a recognition of their status within family structures. Furthermore, welfare initiatives aimed at supporting elderly women and free transport for mothers above 60 years highlight the commitment to uplift women’s status and security.
