The national cybersecurity agency under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) have issued advisory related to Google Chrome browser. Users of Google Chrome have been advised to immediately update Chrome in order to prevent their devices from security threats. In the advisory, the agencies highlighted that if not updated, users’ systems can be attacked by hackers. The advisory also highlighted that there are some major security flaws in previous versions and an update will fix security loopholes and also prevent the risk of cyberattacks.
What is the advisory related to Google Chrome?
Advisory reads, “If your Chrome browser version is older than 144.0.7559.75 on Linux, and 145.0.7632.75/76 on Windows/Mac, your system could be at risk. A vulnerability has been reported in Google Chrome, which could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system,”.
The advisory also noted that the problem in Google Chrome is due to a technical error that is called “Use-After-Free” bug, this clearly means that even if the memory is cleared, Chrome would continue to use some memory, and it is easy for hackers to take undue advantage of the situation.
To make people understand in a better way, the advisory also mentioned that the attackers don’t need physical access to the system to attack, they are smart enough to trick users by one click on a malicious link and once the user clicks, the attacker easily gets access. “A remote attacker could exploit the vulnerability by convincing a user to visit a specially crafted HTML webpage. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system,”. The advisory noted.
Advisory further read that if the attacker gets successful, then a hacker easily runs a malicious code on users’ system, they can steal data, install malware, spy and even control the system operation.
How to get the latest Chrome version?
Open the Chrome, go to three dot-menu at the top right corner, then go to settings, click on chrome. Once you select chrome, chrome will automatically start searching for updates and start downloading the latest version. Once the update is done, restart the browser.
