Uruguay’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Mario Lubetkin, has arrived in New Delhi on September 11 to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit. His arrival was met with a warm reception by senior personnel from India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), indicating the importance of this visit in strengthening diplomatic relations.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties Between India and Uruguay

This visit comes at a time when India and Uruguay are advancing their mutual ties. In July, India appointed Binoy George as the new Ambassador to Uruguay, reflecting the growing diplomatic engagement between the two nations. Ambassador Alberto Antonio Guani Amarilla of Uruguay has welcomed India’s upcoming establishment of an embassy in Uruguay next month, viewing it as a significant milestone in enhancing bilateral relationships.

Amarilla expressed optimism about Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar attending the embassy’s inauguration, highlighting this as a foundational step in fostering high-level interaction between the two countries. He stated that Uruguay is keen to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as look forward to a visit from the President of Uruguay to India, thereby facilitating further dialogue and collaboration.

The Ambassador noted that Latin America seeks to remain a steadfast partner with India as it progresses toward becoming a developed economy. He emphasised the potential for expanding cooperation in various productive sectors, marking the importance of this relationship.

BRICS Summit and its Global Relevance

The 18th BRICS Summit is scheduled to take place in New Delhi on September 12-13, under India’s 2026 BRICS Chairship. The theme for this year’s summit is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” with a particular focus on development, sustainability, and innovation. The summit aims to solidify BRICS as a crucial platform for fostering cooperation among major emerging economies.

BRICS currently comprises eleven countries: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the UAE. Collectively, these nations represent approximately 49.5 per cent of the global population, accounting for 40 per cent of the global gross domestic product (GDP) and 26 per cent of worldwide trade. This demonstrates the growing influence of BRICS on the global stage.

In the context of contemporary challenges such as economic fragmentation, technological disruption, and climate change, the expanded BRICS grouping aims to provide a platform for cooperation on various fronts, including development, climate action, energy, and financial resilience. The summit’s discussions will also focus on reforming global institutions to better serve the interests of these nations.

The Goals of India’s Chairship in BRICS

India’s Chairship in BRICS for 2026 will prioritise transforming the expanded representation of BRICS members into practical cooperation and measurable outcomes. This entails building consensus among its diverse members while enhancing the operational efficacy of existing mechanisms.

In light of global uncertainties and resource challenges, India’s leadership aims to strengthen the collaborative efforts within BRICS, reaffirming the organisation’s commitment to addressing shared objectives in the international arena. The focus will remain on creating avenues for meaningful engagement that benefit all member states.

As the summit approaches, the expectations from member nations are high, with significant discussions anticipated on key areas affecting the Global South. The outcomes of this summit could influence international dynamics and cooperative frameworks moving forward.
