The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson CR Kesavan has stated that India’s performance at the recently concluded BRICS Summit has been exceptional. Speaking on September 14, 2026, in Chennai, he addressed criticisms from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, asserting that Gandhi’s discontent showcases the Congress party’s engagement in “petty politics.” The summit, held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from September 12-13, gathered leaders from BRICS nations alongside several partner countries.

Kesavan claimed that India’s position on the international stage is strengthening, emphasising that Gandhi’s inability to critique the summit’s achievements has led him to express dissatisfaction in a nonconstructive manner. He articulated that such criticism from the opposition party reflects a deeper cynicism about India’s growing influence globally.

Kesavan also directed his remarks towards other prominent Congress figures, noting their adverse comments about the summit. He indicated that these statements have not only backfired but have also been contradicted by other members of their party, suggesting that there is internal dissent regarding their stance on the summit’s outcomes.

Comparison to Past Congress Administration

In his commentary, Kesavan drew parallels between the current administration and the past Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. He recalled the 2012 BRICS Summit, which he described as a low point for India within the group, mainly due to economic challenges faced under the UPA leadership, which included accusations of policy paralysis. According to him, during that summit, international discussions even suggested the removal of India from BRICS, which indicated the country’s weakened position at the time.

Contrasting this with the current scenario, he posited that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership has markedly improved India’s status on the global stage. Kesavan highlighted that the 18th BRICS Summit revealed India’s transformation, portraying it as a rising economic power attracting international interest and dialogue.

The BJP spokesperson reiterated that achievements from the recent summit include notable outcomes encapsulated in the New Delhi Declaration. He asserted that India now holds the title of the fastest-growing economy in the world, a status he attributes to the current government’s strategic approaches and initiatives.

Prime Minister Modi’s Diplomatic Engagements During BRICS

Amidst the BRICS Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly maintained an active diplomatic agenda, engaging in multiple meetings with Heads of State and Government. Over a period of three days, Modi conducted around 15 bilateral meetings, fostering relationships with various leaders during this significant international gathering.

Noteworthy interactions included discussions with leaders such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. These meetings are said to have covered essential topics such as bilateral relations, regional conflicts, and the utilisation of multilateral cooperative frameworks, dramatically showcasing India’s diplomatic outreach.

The summit’s proceedings have been marked by various “pull-aside” discussions with international leaders and institutions, further expanding India’s global diplomatic footprint. Through these engagements, Modi has been able to communicate India’s priorities, particularly concerning the Global South, thereby enhancing its standing and collaboration in international affairs.
