UP Government Closes 22 Nursing Homes Following Infant’s Death in ICU Fire

The CSR Journal Magazine

The health department in Kanpur initiated a significant inspection drive on Wednesday, prompted by the tragic death of a newborn in a fire incident at the Raja Nursing Home’s intensive care unit. Following orders from District Magistrate Jitendra Kumar Singh, the team from the Chief Medical Officer conducted inspections across 27 nursing homes located in western Kanpur.

22 of 27 Nursing Homes Found Non-Compliant, Sealed

It was discovered that 22 out of these 27 facilities were non-compliant with operational standards, with multiple intensive care units functioning without the necessary approvals. As a result, all identified nursing homes have been sealed by the authorities, and the operators of these establishments have been instructed to provide responses within a three-day timeframe. Law enforcement maintained a significant presence during the inspection to ensure proper execution of the process.

Leadership Response Amidst Ongoing Investigations

Following the inspections, Ramit Rastogi, the Additional Chief Medical Officer, reported that 27 hospitals were examined with the oversight of the Chief Medical Officer. He confirmed the deficiencies found in 22 nursing homes, noting that several intensive care units had been operating without the required permissions. Subsequent to the sealing of these facilities, he indicated that similar inspections would continue throughout the city’s other regions.

FIR Filed in ICU Fire Case, Probe Underway

In a related development, authorities have filed a report concerning the doctor and nursing staff at Raja Nursing Home in connection with the infant’s fatal incident. This incident took place on February 8, when smoke was observed emanating from equipment in the ICU shortly after the baby was delivered. After determining that the facility was operating its intensive care unit without the proper approvals, it too was sealed. As of now, no arrests have been made regarding the doctor and staff, as police await the findings of a medical board investigation before taking further actions.
