Uttar Pradesh has removed almost 2.89 crore names from its draft electoral roll following a large-scale verification exercise under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, the state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Navdeep Rinwa said. This brings the total number of voters in the state down from nearly 15.44 crore to about 12.55 crore.
The deletions include voters who were deceased, had moved permanently, or were registered at multiple locations. According to Rinwa, “Form 7 should be filled in case someone wants to remove their name from the list or if a family member has died. Form 8 should be filled if there is any incorrect information or if the voter has shifted. The first step is to check their name in the draft list published today. Voters have a period of one month to do so.”
81% of UP Voters Verified, 18% Excluded from Draft List
Out of the total electorate, about 12 crore people returned verification forms themselves or through a family member, meaning roughly 81 per cent of voters were successfully mapped. Around 18 per cent, however, did not return their forms and were excluded from the draft list.
The deletions are broken down as follows: 46.23 lakh voters were found to be deceased, 2.17 crore had migrated permanently, and 25.47 lakh were discovered to have duplicate registrations or inconsistencies in their voter information.
The draft electoral roll, released on January 6, opens the window for claims and objections until February 6. Voters whose names are missing can submit Form 6 either online or via their Booth Level Officer (BLO). Rinwa added, “On March 6, 2026, we will issue the final voter list under SIR. Voters should check their details by entering their EPIC number on the website. I urge voters to do so. If their name is not available, they should fill out Form 6.”
UP Tops Draft Voter Deletions at 18.7%
Booth-level officers carried out the fieldwork across more than 15,000 polling stations, with the support of political parties. Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of deletions nationwide during the draft SIR stage, with 18.7 per cent of names removed, slightly higher than Tamil Nadu (15%) and Gujarat (14.5%).
Voters who have shifted residence but contacted the BLO can update their details using Form 8, while those who wish to remove names from the rolls or correct details can use Form 7. The CEO emphasised that all citizens, including those who recently turned 18, should verify their information to ensure it is correct.
The Election Commission is working closely with political parties at both district and state levels to oversee the process. All details and forms are available on the official portal for voter verification and claims.
