United Arab Emirates Warns Motorists Against Entering Flooded Areas, Imposes Penalties

The CSR Journal Magazine

In response to unstable weather conditions and rainfall across various regions of the UAE, authorities have issued an urgent advisory to motorists and residents, urging them to exercise extreme caution near flood-prone areas. The advisory emphasizes the potential dangers associated with approaching valleys, dams, and flood channels during heavy rainfall. The Ministry of Interior has initiated this warning as part of its ongoing efforts to promote public safety and prevent accidents during adverse weather conditions.

Fines and Black Points for Violations

The Ministry has outlined specific penalties for those who disregard warnings regarding flood-prone areas. Gathering near such locations can result in a fine of Dh1,000 in addition to accruing six traffic black points. This penalty underscores the significant risks associated with these areas, which can quickly become hazardous. Furthermore, entering valleys during periods of active water flow is classified as a serious offence, warranting a fine of Dh2,000, accrual of 23 black points, and the impoundment of the vehicle for 60 days. Authorities reiterated that even seemingly shallow or slow-moving floodwaters can pose severe risks.

Restrictions on Emergency Response

Officials stressed that obstructing emergency response teams during severe weather is a violation that could have dire consequences. Individuals who impede police, ambulance, or rescue operations face a penalty of Dh1,000, four black points, and a vehicle impoundment for 60 days. This measure aims to ensure that emergency pathways remain clear, allowing for prompt response during emergencies, which is critical for public safety.

Advice for Motorists During Unstable Weather

In a separate advisory, Abu Dhabi Police have urged motorists to take necessary precautions while traveling amid unpredictable weather. Drivers are advised to check weather forecasts before embarking on journeys, avoid roads with water accumulation, and refrain from approaching floodwaters. It is essential to adhere to all safety instructions issued by relevant authorities during these conditions.

Emphasis on Safe Driving Practices

The Traffic and Patrols Directorate has reinforced the need for safe driving behaviors in light of the current weather hazards. Motorists are encouraged to reduce speed, maintain safe distances from other vehicles, and avoid distractions such as mobile phone use or filming while driving. Police have highlighted that these distractions significantly elevate the likelihood of accidents, particularly under poor weather conditions. Additionally, strict adherence to posted speed limits and electronic road signs is critical for ensuring the safety of all road users during rain and unstable weather conditions.
