Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first manufacturing plant of Arvind Limited in Khochwan, Mirzamurad, Varanasi, on Sunday. This facility, which has been established at a cost of approximately ₹150 crore, is anticipated to generate significant employment opportunities, particularly for local women. The inauguration marks a significant milestone for the Ahmedabad-based textile company, as it expands its operations into the Purvanchal region.

During the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi interacted with officials from the mill to understand the types of fabrics being produced, including those made from Khadi. He highlighted the initiative’s theme, “Your Skill, Your Identity” (Apna Hunar, Apni Pehchan), and engaged with the women workers to learn about their roles and the challenges they encounter in the textile industry.

Employment Opportunities and Training Initiatives

The new facility is expected to provide employment to thousands of individuals, not only from Varanasi but also from the broader Purvanchal region. According to a statement from the Uttar Pradesh government, priority has been given to local women, with over 300 already recruited and undergoing training at the site. This initiative aims to strengthen the local textile and garment manufacturing ecosystem, creating a sustainable source of livelihood for many families.

In addition to the immediate job opportunities, the plant will expand in two phases, further increasing employment prospects. The facility is designed to manufacture a variety of products, including sportswear and undergarments, catering to several major multinational brands. This diversification is expected to enhance the economic landscape of the region.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit included a direct dialogue with women trainees at the unit, emphasising the importance of skill development in empowering local communities. The initiative is seen as a step towards promoting gender equality in the workforce, providing women with the means to contribute economically.

Exhibition and Community Engagement

Following the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi attended an exhibition showcasing the various fabrics produced by Arvind Mills. This exhibition highlighted the innovative designs and quality of textiles that the new plant aims to produce. The Prime Minister’s engagement with the community reflects a commitment to fostering local industries and supporting artisans.

In a ceremonial gesture, Modi also attended the grand finale of a three-day air show at Namo Ghat after the inauguration. The event was attended by notable figures, including Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who welcomed the Prime Minister upon his arrival at the helipad in Khochwan. The presence of these dignitaries underscores the significance of the event for the state and its economic development.

The establishment of this textile plant is a pivotal moment for Arvind Limited as it ventures into a new geographical area. The company’s commitment to local employment and skill development aligns with broader government initiatives aimed at boosting manufacturing and creating sustainable economic growth in the region.
