Cyclone Arnab to Strengthen into Very Severe Storm, Landfall on Oct 28

The CSR Journal Magazine

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Sunday that a Depression currently situated over the East Central and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal is anticipated to move southwards and strengthen into a Deep Depression. The latest information from the IMD indicates that this weather system is likely to further develop into a cyclonic storm and subsequently into a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of Tuesday, October 27. This intensification process is expected to continue, culminating in a very severe cyclonic storm that will approach the Westcentral Bay of Bengal near the Andhra Pradesh coast around the morning of October 28.

Projected Path and Landfall of Cyclone Arnab

Cyclone Arnab is forecasted to make landfall between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam as a very severe cyclonic storm, with maximum sustained wind speeds ranging from 115 to 125 kmph, gusting up to 140 kmph. According to the Director of IMD Bhubaneswar, Manorama Mohanty, the state of Odisha is likely to experience significant rainfall and wind activity as the system intensifies and approaches the coastline. The IMD has issued warnings regarding heavy rainfall expected in various regions of both Odisha and Andhra Pradesh as the cyclone nears land.

The anticipated effects of Cyclone Arnab have prompted the Odisha government to reassess its emergency response strategies. Authorities are actively assigning responsibilities to different departments to ensure a coordinated approach to the impending weather event. This proactive measure aims to mitigate potential damages and ensure public safety as the cyclone approaches.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi of Odisha stated on Saturday that the state government has taken steps to prepare for the cyclone’s impact. He mentioned that a review meeting had been conducted to discuss the cyclone’s potential effects and the measures necessary to address them. CM Majhi noted, “We have received reports indicating that this will lead to heavy rainfall across various districts in these states. We have assigned specific responsibilities to each department, ensuring they are fully prepared in advance. The state government is completely ready to handle this situation. As always, our primary objective remains the same: Zero casualties.”

Andhra Pradesh Prepares for Potential Impact

In neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, the Meteorological Department has forecasted rainfall across parts of the state from October 26 to 29. The department has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in isolated areas over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema on October 26, 27, and 28. Following this, scattered heavy to very heavy rain is expected, with extremely heavy rainfall likely in isolated locations over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on October 27.

For October 28, the forecast includes scattered heavy to very heavy rain, with extremely heavy rainfall anticipated in isolated areas over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. On October 29, heavy rain is expected to continue in parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has reviewed the situation and instructed officials to remain vigilant as the weather system evolves, likely intensifying into a severe cyclonic storm. Precautionary measures have been advised, particularly for residents in low-lying areas.

As the situation develops, both state governments are focusing on public safety and preparedness, ensuring that all necessary resources are mobilised to respond effectively to the cyclone’s impact. The IMD will continue to monitor the system closely and provide updates as needed.
