TVK Contemplates Mass Resignation of MLAs Over DMK-AIADMK Alliance

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is reportedly considering the mass resignation of its Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) if either the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) led by M. K. Stalin or the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami attempts to form the government in Tamil Nadu. This move indicates rising discontent within Vijay’s camp amid the ongoing political impasse.

According to sources close to the party, the leadership of TVK is increasingly frustrated by what it perceives as a collaborative effort between the DMK and AIADMK to thwart Vijay’s ascension to power. Despite TVK emerging as the single-largest party in the recent Assembly elections, the ongoing negotiations appear stuck, contributing to the party’s disillusionment.

A senior functionary of TVK expressed the sentiment that the fractured mandate should not lead to the isolation of the largest party in the Assembly. His remarks highlight the growing belief within the party that the current political dynamics are intentionally sidelining them.

Current Legislative Standing of TVK

In the recent Assembly elections, TVK secured 108 seats, including two victories attributed to Vijay. However, with one seat anticipated to be vacated, the party’s operational strength has been reduced to 107 MLAs. The situation places the TVK in a precarious position, as it currently lacks the numbers required to claim a majority.

While TVK has garnered support from the Congress party, which contributes an additional five members, it still falls short of the majority threshold of 118 in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. This insufficient strength has necessitated the party’s attempts to engage with smaller political entities to bolster its numbers.

The TVK is reportedly reaching out to various smaller parties, including the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), the Left parties, and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). However, as of now, no solid commitments have been secured from these prospective allies.

Challenges in Political Negotiations

The political atmosphere in Tamil Nadu remains tense as negotiations continue to yield no clear outcomes. The reported efforts by DMK and AIADMK to align themselves have raised concerns within TVK, exacerbating the party’s sense of urgency in securing more partnerships to enhance its bargaining power.

With the Assembly’s composition still fragmented, the broader picture remains unclear. The potential mass resignation of TVK’s MLAs could have significant implications on the political landscape in Tamil Nadu, underscoring the delicate balance that must be navigated by all parties involved.

As the clock ticks on government formation, the TVK has made it clear that it will not passively accept a marginalised role. The unfolding situation highlights the intricate political dynamics at play, as the formation of a stable government in Tamil Nadu continues to elude resolution.
