TVK Denies Filing Plea in Supreme Court Seeking Directions to Tamil Nadu Governor Over Inviting Vijay For Govt Formation

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) recently stated that the party did not file a petition with the Supreme Court to seek directions from Governor Rajendra Arlekar regarding the appointment of party leader C Joseph Vijay as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. This announcement was made on May 8, 2023, following claims from a petitioner, Ezhilarasi K, who alleged to be an active member of the party and sought judicial intervention.

According to sources associated with TVK, the petition filed by Ezhilarasi K does not represent the party’s official stance or intentions. The clarification aims to dispel any confusion regarding the party’s position and its ongoing political activities in Tamil Nadu.

Recent Political Developments in Tamil Nadu

C Joseph Vijay, an actor-turned-politician, is preparing to assume the role of Chief Minister after TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the recent Assembly elections. The party secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, yet it still requires additional support to reach the majority threshold of 118 seats needed to govern without coalition assistance.

Following discussions with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Lok Bhavan, Vijay solidified his claim to form the government by leveraging alliances with several political parties. Notably, TVK received endorsements from the Congress party, the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), enabling it to surpass the majority mark.

The letters of support from these allied parties have played a crucial role in TVK’s ability to secure governance, as they bring in additional seats—specifically, two seats each from both CPI and CPI(M), and five seats from Congress—to achieve the necessary coalition majority.

Political Alliances Strengthen TVK’s Position

In an official communiqué, CPI(M) expressed its support for TVK, highlighting a commitment to forming a stable government in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, CPI has conditionally extended its backing to Vijay’s leadership, citing the need for governance that is stable, secular, and democratic for the state’s populace.

The support from these parties, which together enhance TVK’s seat count to the required number, marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Tamil Nadu post-elections. The outcome of these developments signals a potentially transformative period for the state, as Vijay aims to navigate the complex political environment and fulfil the expectations of the electorate.

As Vijay prepares to step into his new role, stakeholders and the public alike await to see how his administration will tackle existing challenges and what priorities will emerge from his leadership. With a fractured mandate and diverse coalition, the clarity of governance and policy direction remains a key area of interest for citizens and political analysts alike.
