Donald Trump Slams Judges, Vows Fresh Tariffs After Court Setback

President Donald Trump has publicly condemned the United States Supreme Court following a ruling that blocked his proposed global tariffs. In a 6-3 decision, the court determined that Trump lacks the authority to impose sweeping tariffs on imports without congressional approval.

In response to the court’s ruling, Trump announced on Friday his intention to introduce a new 10% global tariff that will be effective for a period of 150 days. This tariff is designed to substitute some of the emergency tariffs that the Supreme Court invalidated. The new levy will be in addition to existing tariffs on various sectors, including steel, aluminum, and auto parts.

United States Supreme Court Curtails Emergency Trade Powers in 6–3 Ruling

The president expressed strong disapproval of the justices who voted against him, labeling those from the liberal wing as a “disgrace to our nation.” He also criticized conservative justices who sided with the decision, calling them “unpatriotic and disloyal” to the United States Constitution.

Following the Supreme Court’s announcement, which curbed the president’s emergency powers to alter tariffs, Trump contended that he has found alternative methods to sustain and potentially increase tariffs. He emphasized his belief that existing trade laws offer him sufficient authority to impose higher tariffs than those that were previously in place.

Trump stated, “In order to protect our country, a president can actually charge more tariffs than I was charging in the past period of a year under the various tariffs authorities.” He further conveyed confidence that he could utilize different statutes, which empower the president in trade matters, to enact a new tariff framework.

New Tariff Push Amid Ongoing Trade Tensions With China and Others

The announcement of the new tariff comes amidst ongoing trade tensions, particularly with China and various other countries. Trump’s administration has consistently defended its tariff strategies as essential for safeguarding American industries and labor.

With the new tariffs set to commence within three days, it remains to be seen how international partners and domestic stakeholders will respond to this latest development. The president’s ongoing commitment to tariffs reveals a broader strategy aimed at reshaping U.S. trade policies in a manner he deems favorable to American interests.
