TMC Appoints Madan Mitra As New Chief Whip In West Bengal Assembly

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has appointed Madan Mitra as the new Chief Whip in the West Bengal Assembly, replacing Firhad Hakim. The announcement was made through a formal communiqué submitted to the Speaker’s office on June 22. However, the Speaker’s office reportedly refused to accept the letter, stating that the matter was “sub-judice.” This response has sparked controversy within the party.

TMC leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay visited the Speaker’s office to deliver a hard copy of the nomination following an official email sent by the party the previous night. The rejection of this communication has raised questions regarding the procedural conduct of the Speaker’s office.

The TMC claims that the refusal to acknowledge the nomination is unjust and has positioned the party in a difficult spot, especially as it attempts to consolidate its leadership within the Assembly.

Disciplinary Measures Taken Against Senior Leaders

In a related development, the TMC disciplinary committee has issued show-cause notices to several high-profile party members. This group includes Firhad Hakim, Aroop Biswas, Arup Roy, Javed Khan, Rathin Ghosh, Biplab Mitra, Snehasis Chakraborty, and Sabina Yasmin. They are being accused of indulging in activities deemed anti-party.

This move by the disciplinary committee indicates a strategy to reinforce party discipline amid signs of internal discord. The notices are reportedly a response to factionalism within the organisation.

As the TMC navigates these challenges, the leadership is keen to establish a unified front to address both internal and external pressures impacting party cohesion.

Emergence of a Rebel Faction

This situation occurs simultaneously with a notable split within the TMC, led by the West Bengal Leader of Opposition, Ritabrata Banerjee. On June 21, this faction announced a new leadership structure for the All India Trinamool Congress Committee, which includes the appointment of Arup Roy as chairperson.

The rebel faction also established a 30-member National Working Committee (NWC) and has expressed a desire for former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to assume a mentoring role. This internal reorganisation suggests a significant shift in the party’s power dynamics, further complicating the existing rifts.

Banerjee stated that the special session held earlier provided a platform for the unanimous election of the new committee members. This elected body comprises notable figures, including Firhad Hakim, Aroop Biswas, and Rathin Ghosh, among others, who have also been given vice-presidential roles.

The developments within the TMC highlight a period of significant upheaval, with implications for the party’s future direction and unity. The internal conflicts and leadership changes are raising concerns about the party’s ability to maintain its standing in the political landscape of West Bengal.
