‘Thought I’d Go Bankrupt’: Samay Raina On India’s Got Latent Fallout

The CSR Journal Magazine

Samay Raina has divulged the financial difficulties he encountered due to the backlash following his participation in the show India’s Got Latent. In a recent interview, Raina expressed that the negative repercussions left him apprehensive about facing bankruptcy, reminiscent of the financial distress experienced by iconic actor Amitabh Bachchan in the late 1990s.

Impact of Sponsorship Losses

In his conversation with Dostcast, Raina elaborated on the consequences of the controversy, stating he lost significant sponsorships and had to access his fixed deposits to repay their advances. He explained, “I lost all the upcoming episodes because everyone was scared and didn’t want their episode to be uploaded. I also lost the sponsors for those episodes.” Comedian Raina revealed that he had invested their payments in fixed deposits and had to break them to return the funds, describing the situation as chaotic.

Raina also mentioned that he had numerous projects lined up, including advertisements which he had already filmed. However, as the fallout intensified, clients sought refunds, adding to his distress. He had been engaged with BookMyShow, which had provided an advance for his tour, but all of that money had already been committed elsewhere, leaving him with considerable financial uncertainty. “I was extremely scared,” he shared, reflecting on the pressure he felt as a result of these events.

Raina’s primary concern was the possibility of falling into significant debt, similar to what Amitabh Bachchan faced when his company, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL), collapsed, resulting in substantial financial difficulties and legal challenges.

Background of the Controversy

The controversy originated in February 2025 during an episode of India’s Got Latent featuring YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia and fellow content creators Ashish Chanchlani and Apoorva Mukhija. During the episode, a provocative question posed by Allahbadia triggered widespread backlash, leading to several FIRs against Raina and his co-panellists. The contentious question was: “Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once to make it stop forever?”

Subsequently, the episode was removed from YouTube, and Ranveer Allahbadia issued a public apology regarding the incident. By March, the Supreme Court permitted him to resume his podcasting activities, bringing partial resolution to the conflict.

In his latest comedy special, Raina reflected on the incident, noting that the objectionable joke had emerged multiple times during filming, yet only one mention had made it to the final edit, igniting outrage. He also expressed the profound effect the turmoil had on his mental health, capturing the sense of helplessness he endured throughout the ordeal. Nevertheless, despite these challenges, he has suggested the possibility of a second season for India’s Got Latent, garnering anticipation among fans.
