Tensions Emerge as Indian Tourists Report Unpleasant Encounters in Vietnam

The CSR Journal Magazine

Vietnam has increasingly become a sought-after destination for Indian travelers, attracting attention due to its scenic beauty and affordability. Recent years have seen a significant rise in the number of Indian tourists, with about 158,000 visitors reported in the first two months of 2026, representing an increase of over 71 percent compared to the same timeframe in the previous year. In 2024, the country welcomed more than 507,000 Indian tourists, which is a notable 297 percent rise compared to pre-pandemic figures. Hotspots like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Phu Quoc have particularly drawn Indian honeymooners, tour groups, and wedding planners. However, the experiences of some travelers have raised concerns regarding treatment from local vendors.

Reports of Disparaging Treatment

Multiple Indian tourists have come forward to share unsettling experiences during their visits to Vietnam. A professional from Noida, recounted an incident at a street market where a shopkeeper reportedly dismissed her request for shoes after learning she was from India. Surprised by this reaction, she expressed disappointment at the unwelcoming attitude despite the large number of Indian visitors to the country. Another tourist from Delhi, experienced a similar scenario when trying to bargain at a shop, where the vendor used a translation app to convey hostility, saying, “You Indians come here, bargain and waste our time. Get lost.” Another encounter led to a confrontation when three Indian women going to purchase suitcases were ignored in favor of foreign customers, prompting an outburst from the shopkeeper when they decided to leave without making a purchase.

Negative Experiences Recounted by Tourists

A journalist who traveled to Vietnam the previous year, noted instances of discourteous behavior from shopkeepers as well. She described an occasion at a vegetable stall where the vendor abruptly asked her group to leave, and on another occasion, a shopkeeper refused to answer her price inquiry about a dress. Other visitors additionally reported feeling uncomfortable with aggressive behavior from certain individuals, while at least two tourists recounted experiences involving shopkeepers attempting to take money from them directly.

Understanding the Underlying Factors

Although the unpleasant behavior faced by some Indian tourists cannot be condoned, several said it may stem from generalizations and stereotypes about Indian travelers. Some individuals believe that aggressive bargaining practices contribute to a negative perception, which might lead to unkind treatment. Comments from a few visitors suggested that the demeanor and actions of some Indian tourists contribute to the hostility they face, resulting in visible irritation among locals. Nevertheless, it is essential to highlight that even courteous visitors have reported being met with rudeness.

Shopkeepers Share Their Perspectives

Local vendors were mixed in their responses about Indian tourists. Some acknowledged that aggressive bargaining can frustrate them, making it challenging to attend to other customers. A shopkeeper recounted a situation where a tourist attempted to negotiate a much lower price than the set amount, leading to annoyance. Conversely, not every vendor shared this sentiment, with some appreciating the presence of Indian tourists and expressing gratitude. One vendor conveyed their willingness to learn basic Hindi phrases to attract Indian customers and mentioned that negative experiences may be isolated cases.

Local Guides Address the Issues

A local tour guide reinforced that disrespectful behavior by shopkeepers is unacceptable and mentioned that he would report any such incidents to the authorities. He expressed hope that these events are anomalies rather than the norm. The Vietnamese embassy in Delhi has also been contacted regarding the treatment of Indian tourists, but a response is pending.

Continued Attraction Despite Incidents

Vietnam remains a captivating travel destination known for its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and acclaimed culinary scene. From the picturesque Ha Long Bay to the charming streets of Hoi An, the country offers an immersive experience that continues to draw visitors. Indian tourists benefit from enhanced connectivity, affordability, and cultural curiosity, which make Vietnam an appealing spot. Enhancements in mutual understanding and respect may pave the way for better interactions in the future.
