Telangana Engineering Student Killed By Girlfriend’s Family With Bat, Was Lured for ‘Marriage Talk’

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic case of alleged honour violence has emerged from Telangana’s Sangareddy district, where a second-year engineering student was beaten to death by his girlfriend’s family. The victim, Jyothi Sravan Sai, a B.Tech Computer Science student at St. Peter’s Engineering College, was fatally attacked after being invited to the girl’s home under the pretext of discussing their marriage.

Relationship Under Strain for Months

Sravan, who lived in a rented room in Qutbullapur to pursue his studies, had been in a relationship with 19-year-old Sreeja, a resident of Isukabavi in Beeramguda. According to Ameenpur Circle Inspector Naresh, the girl’s family had long opposed their relationship and had repeatedly warned Sravan to end it. Despite pressure and threats, the couple reportedly continued to stay in contact.

Marriage Discussion Turns Deadly

On the day of the attack, Sreeja’s parents summoned Sravan to their home, assuring him that they wished to speak about the couple’s future and possible marriage. Trusting their intentions, Sravan visited the residence. Police allege that he was ambushed immediately upon arrival. Sreeja’s family, including her mother, allegedly assaulted him with a cricket bat, inflicting severe head injuries and fractures to his legs and ribs.

“Sai came from his hostel in Gandimaisamma around 11am. The girl’s mother confronted him over the pregnancy and reprimanded both. In a fit of rage, she grabbed a cricket bat lying nearby and began hitting her daughter,” Ameenpur police said.

“Sai stepped in to shield her, and the bat struck his head.” Though he did not appear seriously hurt at the time, Sai stayed back at the house and slept in a separate room. Later in the evening, the girl complained of pain from the blows and was taken to hospital along with family members and returned home around midnight.

Rushed to Hospital but Could Not Be Saved

Sravan was taken to a private hospital in Kukatpally, where doctors declared him dead due to extensive trauma. The news has sparked shock and unrest in the locality, with residents expressing outrage over the violent assault.

Around 3 am, the family noticed Sai struggling to breathe. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” police said. Sai and the girl were schoolmates, police said. Sai, who lost both parents, was under the care of his uncle. Officers said caste differences did not appear to be the motive. “At this stage, it does not look like honour killing. The mother seems to have acted out of anger over the pregnancy. However, we are still examining all angles,” police said.

Police Register Case and Begin Investigation

Ameenpur Police have filed a murder case, recovered the cricket bat used in the attack, and documented the crime scene. The body has been sent for post-mortem as investigators attempt to determine the precise motive and whether additional family members participated in the assault.

The incident has revived concerns about honour-related crimes and intolerance against inter-family relationships, raising questions about safety and societal attitudes.
