INS Sudarshini, the sail training ship of the Indian Navy, embarked on its journey from Livorno, Italy, on September 12, following a productive port call. The Ministry of Defence reported that the vessel’s visit enabled various professional interactions aimed at reinforcing the maritime partnership between India and Italy.

During her stay in Livorno, INS Sudarshini engaged in cross-training activities, which contributed to the enhancement of camaraderie and cooperation between the two nations, according to the Defence Ministry. Such initiatives play a significant role in fostering a spirit of unity and collaboration in maritime endeavours.

Admiral Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto, Chief of the Italian Navy, visited the ship, where he had the opportunity to meet with both the crew and the trainees. This engagement was intended to establish direct communication and mutual understanding among naval personnel from both countries.

Diplomatic Engagements and High-Level Interactions

The Ministry of Defence highlighted that Admiral Bergotto’s visit served as an indicator of the strengthening diplomatic ties between New Delhi and Rome. Comprehensive briefings were provided to the Admiral concerning the ship’s ongoing activities and training objectives, contributing to deeper bilateral relations.

Vani Rao, India’s Ambassador to Italy, also visited INS Sudarshini during its stay in Livorno. Ambassador Rao met with officers, sailors, and cadets, emphasising the long-standing maritime connections and strategies shared between India and Italy. Her engagement included welcoming distinguished Italian guests during an onboard reception.

In remarks made during her visit, Ambassador Rao underscored efforts to enhance maritime security cooperation, highlighting the significance of the enduring relationship between the two countries. She expressed her wishes for the crew to have prosperous journeys ahead as they pursue the Lokayan 2026 mission.

Training Exchanges and Future Initiatives

Commander Ravikanth Nandoori, who is in command of INS Sudarshini, had a meeting with Rear Admiral Alberto Tarabotto, the Commandant of the Italian Naval Academy. This meeting facilitated the exchange of insights regarding the deployment, reflecting ongoing collaboration in naval training.

Other interactions were held with local officials, including Livorno Mayor Luca Salvetti and Vice Prefect Edoardo Lombardi. These discussions further illustrated the commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation and understanding in maritime affairs.

As part of the ship’s training initiatives, Indian sea trainees participated in visits to the Italian naval vessel ITS Virginio Fasan and the Italian Naval Academy, while their Italian counterparts were welcomed aboard INS Sudarshini. These exchanges are designed to cultivate professional relationships and foster a spirit of mutual respect in naval operations.

As INS Sudarshini continues its journey as part of the Lokayan 2026 initiative, it embodies the ethos of maritime partnership and the strategic vision represented by MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions), as noted by the Ministry of Defence.
