Teenager Takes Board Exam After 13 Days on Ventilator

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 17-year-old student named Kanishka Bist recently demonstrated extraordinary resolve when she appeared for her Class 12 board examination after spending 13 days on a ventilator in an intensive care unit. On Friday, she participated in the exam while still attached to an oxygen cylinder, showcasing her bravery and commitment to her education. Kanishka, who has lived with muscular dystrophy since birth, has faced numerous challenges, especially with her condition becoming more severe in recent weeks. Her recent illness was triggered by what initially appeared to be a common cough and cold.

Medical Emergency Escalates Rapidly

Kanishka’s father, Prem Singh Bist, a businessman from Zirakpur, detailed the rapid escalation of her health issues. Starting from January 30, she experienced a persistent cough and cold, but her symptoms quickly deteriorated. By February 2, she was admitted to a local hospital in Panchkula for treatment. As her condition worsened, Kanishka was transferred to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Chandigarh, where she was placed in the intensive care unit and required ventilator support.

Focus on Exams Amid Recovery

During her 13 days on the ventilator, Kanishka remained unconscious for nearly ten days, as per her father’s account. While many individuals in her situation would prioritize recovery, Kanishka remained determined to take her board exam, particularly her physics paper. On Thursday evening, she expressed her wish to participate in the examination scheduled for the next day, prompting her family to coordinate with the school authorities and the examination center, which was located approximately 10 kilometers away in Manimajra.

Special Arrangements Made by Examination Board

Due to her medical circumstances, the Central Board of Secondary Education permitted her an additional hour to complete the examination. Previous arrangements during her Class 10 boards had also accommodated her health difficulties, allowing her similar extensions. Kanishka opted to write the examination herself, despite the last-minute preparations that resulted in the inability to secure permission for a scribe from the examination board, an indication of her strong will.

Family Support During Challenging Times

As Kanishka grapples with her recovery while preparing for four more examinations, her family, particularly her elder brother, continues to provide unwavering support. Her father expressed optimism about her improvement, noting that the doctors are hopeful for her recovery. Following the resilience she has shown through her recent hardships, her family believes in her ability to overcome the challenges ahead.
