Former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal has surrendered at a Goa court on Monday, following a significant development in a case that has persisted since 2013. This action comes after the Bombay High Court quashed his previous acquittal and imposed a ten-year prison sentence on him.

The legal issues surrounding Tarun Tejpal originated in November 2013 when a junior female colleague accused him of sexually assaulting her inside a hotel elevator during the ThinkFest event in Goa. Following the accusation, Tejpal was arrested later that month and spent time in custody until he was granted bail in July 2014.

The trial commenced in 2017 and culminated in May 2021 when a Goa Sessions Court acquitted Tejpal of all charges. However, this acquittal was challenged by the Goa government, leading to further hearings in higher courts, ultimately resulting in an appeal to the Bombay High Court.

On August 6, 2023, the Bombay High Court’s Goa Bench delivered a significant judgement by overturning the 2021 acquittal. The court subsequently found Tejpal guilty of rape and related offences, sentencing him to ten years of rigorous imprisonment.
