Suvendu Adhikari to take oath as West Bengal’s first BJP Chief Minister

In a historic political shift, Suvendu Adhikari is set to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal on Saturday, marking the formation of the state’s first-ever BJP-led government. The announcement followed a crucial meeting of the BJP legislative party held at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre on Friday afternoon, in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

During the meeting, Adhikari—who represents both Nandigram and Bhabanipur constituencies—was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP legislative party. Formal confirmation came from Amit Shah, who stated that Adhikari’s name was the first to be proposed and that no other nominations were put forward.

“Consequently, Suvendu Adhikari has been unanimously elected as the leader of the legislative party. He will take the oath as Chief Minister on Saturday,” Shah announced.

A defining electoral victory

Adhikari’s elevation caps a decisive electoral journey that saw him defeat incumbent Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in two consecutive Assembly elections. His latest victory in Bhabanipur is widely regarded as a defining moment in the BJP’s campaign, symbolising a strategic and aggressive push that ultimately reshaped the state’s political landscape.

Political observers note that Adhikari’s decision to contest from Bhabanipur sent a strong signal of intent, reinforcing the BJP’s commitment to challenging the ruling establishment at its strongest bastions. His triumph not only consolidated his leadership within the party but also positioned him as the undisputed frontrunner for the top post.

Consensus within party ranks

In the aftermath of the election results, speculation over the Chief Ministerial candidate quickly subsided, with party insiders and senior leaders rallying behind Adhikari. Prominent voices within the BJP credited him with strengthening the party’s organisational and electoral footing in Bengal, with some asserting that he played a key role in shaping the party’s campaign strategy in the state.

Adhikari, considered a trusted aide of the Union Home Minister, appeared to receive a symbolic endorsement upon Shah’s arrival in Kolkata earlier in the day. A brief but notable gesture—Shah patting Adhikari on the back at the airport—was seen by many as a public signal of approval and confidence.

Formal felicitation at party meet

Following the official announcement at the legislative party meeting, Amit Shah and State BJP President Samik Bhattacharya felicitated Adhikari on stage. The two leaders congratulated him by placing a lotus garland around his neck, marking the formal sealing of his leadership.

With the oath-taking ceremony scheduled for Saturday, West Bengal now stands on the cusp of a new political chapter under BJP leadership, with Adhikari at the helm.
