“Strait of Hormuz Open to Commercial Shipping with Naval Cooperation”: Iran Foreign Minister

The CSR Journal Magazine

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi stated that the Strait of Hormuz remains accessible to all commercial vessels, highlighting the necessity for coordination with Iranian naval forces. This announcement follows rising regional tensions and what Iran terms as an “illegal blockade” enforced by the United States on its ports. During an interview with Press TV, Araghchi elaborated on the geopolitical situation affecting the strategically important waterway.

He mentioned, “The Strait of Hormuz is now suffering more than anything from American aggression and the blockade it has imposed on it.” This remark underscores Iran’s perspective regarding external influences on the maritime traffic in the area.

Maritime Safety in the Region

The Iranian Foreign Minister emphasised that Tehran has not hindered maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil shipments. He stated, “We have not created any obstacles; it is America that has created the blockade, and I hope this situation will end with the lifting of this illegal blockade imposed by America.” His comments reflect a call for international recognition of Iran’s position in the region.

In response to the tense atmosphere, Araghchi’s statements come as international focus intensifies on maritime security and energy supply routes, particularly those involving the Strait of Hormuz. Historically, this chokepoint, located between Iran and Oman, has been a fulcrum for geopolitical maneuvers between Iran and the US amid ongoing regional conflicts.

To enhance safety, cooperation with Iranian naval forces has been termed essential for commercial vessels intending to navigate through the strait. This approach points to Iran’s willingness to maintain open channels for maritime commerce while advocating for its security protocols.

Challenges to Regional Stability

Also contributing to the discourse on the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi recently addressed the security dynamics of the region. He asserted that improvements in the maritime security situation would materialise upon the restoration of peace, attributing current challenges to a lack of serious diplomatic efforts by the United States. He remarked on the impact of geopolitical manoeuvering on regional stability.

Speaking to ANI, Gharibabadi stated, “Strait of Hormuz situation will be better than before once peace is established. There will be transparency. There will be no discrepancy. We will not go beyond international law.” His remarks highlight Iran’s commitment to operating within international legal frameworks amid ongoing tensions.

Furthermore, the Deputy Foreign Minister condemned the US’s approach, alleging it does not engage in substantive diplomatic discussions that could alleviate tensions in the region. He emphasised the need for meaningful dialogue to promote security and safety in this critical maritime corridor.
