The CSR Journal Magazine

The Congress party on Saturday commemorated the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, recognising her as a symbol of courage, determination, and visionary leadership. This tribute was reported by the Press Trust of India. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, along with former party chiefs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, offered floral tributes at Shakti Sthal, her memorial located in New Delhi.

In addition to their visit to Shakti Sthal, Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi, along with several other Congress leaders, paid homage at the Indira Gandhi Memorial situated at 1, Safdarjung Road, which was the residence of the former Prime Minister. This gathering highlighted the party’s respect and remembrance of her contributions to the nation.

Rahul Gandhi shared a Sanskrit shloka that his grandmother had taught him, reflecting on cherished memories of his time with her. He recited the shloka, which translates to a prayer for guidance from darkness to light, and expressed gratitude for the wisdom imparted to him. His emotional tribute underscored the personal connection he felt towards his grandmother.

Kharge’s Reflections on Indira Gandhi

During the commemorative event, Mallikarjun Kharge described Indira Gandhi as a figure of indomitable courage and unwavering resolve. He emphasised her significant contributions to the development of a robust and progressive India, asserting that her legacy remains influential in contemporary society. Kharge noted that her sacrifices for the unity and integrity of the nation would be permanently remembered.

In a post on X, Kharge shared a quote attributed to Indira Gandhi, labelling her as an eternal source of inspiration. He remarked on her dedication to preserving the unity and honour of the nation, affirming that her invaluable contributions to modern India would always resonate within the national consciousness. Kharge concluded his tribute by stating that her courage serves as an inspiration and her sacrifices are an indelible memory for the nation.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress general secretary and granddaughter of Indira Gandhi, also paid her respects, describing her grandmother as a remarkable woman. She characterised Indira Gandhi as “free as the sky, deep as the ocean, resilient as the earth, and brighter than fire,” reflecting on her multifaceted personality and the impact she had on those around her.

Commemoration of a National Icon

The Congress party’s official social media handle conveyed a message of tribute, stating, “On the death anniversary of India’s first woman Prime Minister, a symbol of indomitable courage and willpower, Smt. Indira Gandhi ji, humble tribute.” This statement encapsulated the party’s collective sentiment towards Indira Gandhi’s enduring legacy.

Indira Gandhi was born on November 19, 1917, and her life was tragically cut short when she was assassinated by her bodyguards on October 31, 1984. The Congress leaders’ observance of her death anniversary serves as a reminder of her leadership, her contributions to the shaping of modern India, and her profound sacrifices for the unity and integrity of the country.

As the nation reflects on her legacy, the tributes from Congress leaders highlight the ongoing relevance of Indira Gandhi’s ideals and the impact she had on Indian politics and society. Her memory continues to inspire discussions on leadership, resilience, and national unity.
