PM Modi was conferred Slovakia’s highest civilian honour, the Order of the White Double Cross (1st Class), during his visit to Bratislava on Monday, marking another milestone in the growing ties between India and Slovakia.

The award, presented by Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, is the 33rd international honour bestowed upon PM Modi by a foreign nation. It also came during the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Slovakia since the country’s independence in 1993.

Expressing gratitude after receiving the award, PM Modi dedicated the honour to the people of India and the enduring friendship between the two countries.

“This honour belongs to the 140 crore people of India,” he said, describing it as a tribute to the shared values and close relations between India and Slovakia.

High-Level Talks Focus On Expanding Cooperation

President Pellegrini welcomed PM Modi at the Presidential Palace in Bratislava, where the two leaders discussed ways to expand cooperation in trade, technology, defence and strategic affairs.

PM Modi was accompanied by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and other senior officials.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi held delegation-level talks with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, during which both countries signed Memorandums of Understanding on labour migration and digital technology.

The agreements reflected efforts by New Delhi and Bratislava to strengthen cooperation across several sectors and deepen the bilateral partnership.

Leaders Attend Yoga Session And Cultural Exhibition

Ahead of International Day of Yoga on June 21, PM Modi and President Pellegrini participated in a special yoga session organised at the Presidential Palace.

The two leaders also visited an exhibition inspired by Varanasi, PM Modi’s parliamentary constituency. The exhibition showcased artworks highlighting the spiritual and cultural heritage of one of India’s oldest cities.

The events underlined the growing cultural engagement between the two nations alongside expanding strategic and economic ties.

Visit Marks New Chapter In Bilateral Relations

PM Modi also paid tribute to Slovak soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom by laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Bratislava.

The visit follows a series of high-level exchanges between the two countries, including President Droupadi Murmu’s State visit to Slovakia in 2025 and President Peter Pellegrini’s visit to India earlier this year.

The latest engagements underscore the increasing momentum in India-Slovakia relations and reflect the shared commitment of both sides to deepen cooperation across political, economic, technological and cultural spheres.

With the conferral of Slovakia’s highest civilian award and the signing of key agreements, PM Modi’s visit is being seen as a landmark moment in the evolution of ties between New Delhi and Bratislava.
