India’s ODI vice-captain, Shreyas Iyer, has been discharged from a hospital in Sydney following treatment for an abdominal and rib injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia. The BCCI confirmed that Iyer is stable and recovering well.

“He [Shreyas Iyer] is now stable and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his recovery, and he has been discharged from the hospital today,” the board said in a statement on Saturday.

The 30-year-old suffered a laceration to his spleen after attempting a diving catch to dismiss Australia’s Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling on October 25, 2025. The injury caused internal bleeding, which was promptly controlled through a minor medical procedure.

“The BCCI extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr Koroush Haghighi and his team in Sydney, along with Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for ensuring Shreyas received the best treatment for his injury. Shreyas will continue to stay in Sydney for follow-up consultations and will return to India once he is deemed fit to fly,” the statement added.

Initially thought to be a rib injury, Iyer’s condition required ICU admission for careful monitoring. He has since stabilised and is expected to return to India when medically cleared.

Having been recently appointed India’s ODI vice-captain for the series against Australia, Iyer will miss at least two months of cricket, including the upcoming ODI series against South Africa starting November 30 in Ranchi.
