Severe Weather Approaches Middle East, Flooding Risks Heightened Amid Regional Tensions

The CSR Journal Magazine

A significant shift in weather patterns is set to impact the Middle East. Commencing on March 25, 2026, certain regions of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iran, and Iraq are forecasted to experience extended periods of intense rainfall and violent storms. Meteorological experts warn that this unusual weather may lead to flooding in areas that typically receive minimal precipitation, reminiscent of the severe flooding events that affected Abu Dhabi and Dubai in recent years.

Source of the Storm Explained

The impending storm is attributed to a sluggish weather system originating from the Mediterranean Sea, which is advancing toward the eastern territories while drawing in moist air from the Red Sea. This convergence is anticipated to unleash substantial rainfall and thunderstorms throughout the region over the course of several days. Predictions estimate that certain locations could receive between 100 to 500 millimeters of rain from March 23 to March 28, a substantial figure for predominantly arid nations. In Dubai, the average annual rainfall typically totals around 100 millimeters, suggesting that some areas may receive their yearly rainfall within a span of one to two days.

Areas Most Likely to Experience Impacts

The regions expected to bear the brunt of the storms include Dubai and various other parts of the UAE, alongside southern and western areas of Iran, and eastern Iraq. Preceding rainfall earlier in the week will exacerbate the situation, saturating the ground and increasing the likelihood of flooding. Elevated regions in Iraq and Iran may also encounter significant snowfall. Flash floods present the greatest concern for urban centers and dry riverbeds that are ill-equipped to accommodate such volumes of water. Potential consequences include road closures, flight delays, and rapid inundation of low-lying areas. The storms are also predicted to bring strong winds and lightning, further complicating the weather scenario.

Current Situation in Neighboring Regions

Some areas, including Oman and Abu Dhabi, are already experiencing substantial rainfall. In Oman, reports indicate severe flooding along with weather-related fatalities, highlighting the impact of climate variability on a region that is not accustomed to such weather extremes. Authorities are urging residents in impacted areas to exercise caution, steer clear of low-lying regions during storms, and adhere to local advisories. While sporadic storms are not uncommon in the Middle East, the intensity and duration of this particular weather event are notably exceptional.
