Senior Congress Leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Launches Campaign in Berhampore After 30 Years

The CSR Journal Magazine

In Murshidabad, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a prominent figure in the Congress party, is campaigning for the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal. Chowdhury is contesting from the Berhampore constituency, marking his return to state politics after three decades. A five-time Member of Parliament, he aims to reinvigorate the party’s influence in the region. His main opponents are Subrata Moitra from the Bharatiya Janata Party and Naru Gopal Mukherjee representing the Trinamool Congress.

Chowdhury Reflects on Local Connections and Challenges

Having previously been elected as an MLA in Nabagram in 1996, Chowdhury resigned in 1999 to focus on national politics. Now he seeks to reconnect with the local populace, utilizing his childhood experiences in Berhampore as a focal point during his campaign. Chowdhury noted the importance of local engagement, stating, “We will have to get out and meet people. Those are the rules of elections…As a child, I played here on these grounds.”

Addressing Local Issues Amid Political Rivalries

In his interactions, Chowdhury emphasized the transformation of Berhampore, lamenting the rise of “concrete jungles” that he claims are leading to various socio-economic problems. He described the situation as a “loot” where essential resources are overly taxed. Furthermore, the candidate expressed his belief that the challenges he faces are compounded by a disconnect between his rivals and the local community.

Anticipated Support and Electoral Strategy

Following a setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Chowdhury expressed confidence in regaining the trust of voters. He attributed his recent defeat to communal polarization, suggesting that many constituents later regretted their choice. He articulated a sense of optimism regarding his prospects in the upcoming Assembly elections, stating, “This time, I will get support in the elections.” His campaign appears to center on reinforcing his longstanding relationship with the constituency.

Election Timeline and Preparations

The West Bengal Assembly elections will be conducted in two phases, with polling for the first phase set for April 23 and the second phase on April 29. Counting of votes is scheduled for May 4. According to the Election Commission of India, the first phase, covering 152 Assembly constituencies, will see the issuance of the gazette notification on March 30. The deadline for nominations in this phase is April 6, with nomination scrutiny occurring on April 7. Candidates can withdraw their nominations by April 9. The second phase will involve 142 constituencies, with a gazette notification to be issued on April 2 and nominations closing on April 9.
